Re: The Manchester United Society VII
Games like yesterday and the Community Shield really show how good players like Scholes and Giggs are, they are still able to control games and score and set up goals even now they are older and slower than before.
Anyone else feel Berba is going to have a really good season? His bicycle kick attempt last night shows he must have some confidence there! -
Re: The Manchester United Society VII
Actually I didn't think Giggsies finish was that amazing. He hit it into the ground way more than he intended, and it was a smidgen lucky that it sailed into the corner like it did..
Still - a good goal to cap a good performance, although Berbatov drove me up the wall again last night. He could be so good if he just accelerated beyond a slow jog once in a while. -
Re: The Manchester United Society VII
Season started this is my thought on our start. Typically as demonstrated this season we will play 442 RUSH & CRUSH relying heavily on mr scholes. This will create a big problem for us when we play in the KO Champions League. It works against feeble and light minded opposition in the PL, beacuse they haven't the clue that if you somehow keep the ball you can easily undress teams with conventional 442.
The problem the 442 will create is that when Ferguson summons the tried & tested 443 with rooney on his own, in European away games, it may backfire due to the psychological placing of urgency in the players, who are so used to 442. The urgency can be seen yesterday, when the entire midfield was in the last third of the opposition half= counter, a problem exacerbated by Carrick's absence. They will probably always look for scholes and he for the killer pass. The opposing team will be patient, and without Ronaldo (superman) we will get murdered as usual on the counter. It is perhaps a problem solely created by the signing of berba, who as impressive as he was last night, has no place in a counter-attacking side which dominated Europe for two years since 2008, only for the system to fall apart due to some unfortunate departures. On another note I sill have no idea why fergie plays o'Shea the donkey, the amount of times he got donw by that argentenian bitch was boom. Perhaps it is because he is consistenly awful; in Fergie's eyes the lad has some consistency at least - give Rafael his chance ffs.
Unless we drop the 442, and summon the balls to tell berba to get out, I can see it being another European adventure full of regret. But we will win the league this year I'm certain

Re: The Manchester United Society VIIIt depends entirely how our opposition are set up. Let's face it, the Mags were never going to have loads of men forward so we had the space to push our midfield further forward. In Europe I can't see the opposition sitting back when they're 3 - 0 down.(Original post by j-b)

Re: The Manchester United Society VIIWe rarely play a 4-4-2 against top quality opposition, SAF prefers to play 5 in the midfield (or 3 up front, depending on how you like it). To play anything other than 2 up front at home to newcastle would be a bit pathetic. I would expect 4-5-1 or some variation of that against bigger teams, with Nani and Valencia providing the pace to counter down the wings. No CL team is going to sit back with 10 men behind the ball when they are 3-0 down to preserve goal difference. I don't think there is much between O'Shea and Rafael, one is more experienced the other is a bit more offensive minded. I think Berba does have a place in the united team, he just needs to confidence to be a threat in his own right rather than always try to set up others.(Original post by j-b)

As for Ozil, I'm a little disappointed as in my mind he was a good player and would have fitted in well, but SAF must have a plan or we would have at least tried for 12.4 million. My new United worry is Macheda, how long is he going to be content to sit on the bench. -
Re: The Manchester United Society VIII agree. When Anderson gets fit again and finds some form, I think him, Scholes and Fletcher in a 4-5-1 would make a very good midfield.(Original post by doggyfizzel)

As for Macheda, I think he will be happy to be making the United bench. It seems like he's been around for ages, but he's only just about to turn 19. He will be getting games in the Carling Cup and the odd sub appearance. Maybe in a few years if he's not progressed any further would he start getting restless. -
Re: The Manchester United Society VII
Ozil gone to Madrid
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OO!
Berba for PFA Player of the Year!
Hernandez, Owen, Rooney and Berba... Good strikeforce, bit like the 99 strikeforce in terms of we had Yorke and Cole as the main frontmen but also good back up in terms of Solskjaer and Sheringham -
Re: The Manchester United Society VII
The beauty of Manchester United is that we are one of the few teams who can revert to a plan B.
Arsenal - its a brute fact they have no plan B
Liverpool - Hodgson might have a few tricks up his sleeve if some matches don't go his way after 60 minutes, but the technical ability of his squad isn't good enough to win the league.
Chelsea - Definately have strength in depth, and a better team on paper. But can they change to a new formation if their current one fails to deliver success? Changing like for like players is one thing, but reverting to a new system that the team plays just as well in in order to win the match... thats something I only see at United.
We start with 442, and if that doesn't work we revert to 451/433, and probably have the most complimentary strikers in the top 5 in terms of ability. This is why, for me, we won't struggle to find creativity. I couldn't care less of Ozil has gone to Madrid, because we have the Nanis Valencias, Scholes, Berbatovs etc. for assists and goals. And all these players have fantastic vision too.
Bring on Fulham and lets take it game by game. -
Re: The Manchester United Society VIIthat pretty much says it all... we do have a sweet midfield though, hopefully Anderson will return with aplomb...(Original post by doggyfizzel)

Yeah we've got too many strikers, for a team that does tend to play 4-5-1, we've got Rooney, Berba, Hernandez, Macheda and Owen in the immediate thought. Against weaker teams we may be able to have 2 starting and 2 on the bench but I can't see us doing that all the time.
I do think we should hang on to Macheda though, not let him go anywhere if it ever comes to that, he'll be amazing one day...
though we could've had a better scoreline. At least 5-0 :P truth! berbatov and scholes were master class today.
