Re: Is Lancaster a good university?
It's amazing for linguistics, I'm pretty sure it's in the top 5. It's in the top 10 for most subjects actually (judging my league tables) which is an achievement. It's a small city/university though so it is more difficult for it to achieve a wide spread reputation such as that of Manchester etc. It takes a while for small places (Durham for example) to gain a wide spread reputation. I personally chose Lancaster over Sheffield, Southampton, Leeds etc. Which are good, bigger, universities.

Re: Is Lancaster a good university?I see that you're doing french and linguistics, I'm thinking of doing European Languages and Management Studies there... how would you rate the French department so far?(Original post by eve1293)

Re: Is Lancaster a good university?
We had a talk in college from a professor from the University, and he made quite a sexist comment in an attempt at a joke on boys who take study performing arts and drama, which went terribly wrong and most of the room was shocked, so as you can imagine, most of us now have a pretty negative opinion of the place.
Probably a good Uni though tbf... -
Re: Is Lancaster a good university?Sorry for the late reply, I had only just started when you posted so I didn't think I could really answer this question. The department is really good from what I have experienced. Some crazy tutors...really quite odd....but they're good fun and crazy in a good way! Quite a big work load - homework after every seminar (we have 3/4 seminars a week instead of lectures), 2 pieces of coursework each term, 1 culture essay each term and LOTS of independant work that you need to record and compile into a portfolio.(Original post by Music22)

Re: Is Lancaster a good university?Sorry to dredge this thread up but I read this and immediately thought:(Original post by reeces101)
I rate Lancaster as a top 10 for business studies. But this department gets quite a large investment from the university so is one of its strong subjects. Also, if you look at the major league tables published by the Times and the Guardian you'll see Lancaster is generally getting better and better. In a few years, who knows, top 3?
For those who do not belong to the Management School will see £8,990 of their £9k tuition fees funding the Management School's expansion.

Re: Is Lancaster a good university?
I'm currently deciding whether to put Manchester,Lancaster,York or Newcastle as my first choice to study English Language/English Language and Linguistics.
I thought Lancaster's reputation was a lot better than people on here have made it out to be, but any pointers as to what to think about? -
Re: Is Lancaster a good university?I don't know much about the overall disciplinary focus of Manchester's linguistics department, but if you're interested in phonetics, I'd say York; if you're interested in sociolinguistics and discourse analysis, Lancaster, definitely (I'm going to do my MA there(Original post by mancuniangirl)

); finally, if you're interested in a more structuralist approach, I think Newcastle fits that profile. Maybe I'm wrong, but that's what I found looking at those unis' websites. Hope this helps

I visited Lancaster city centre today as I was scared it was going to be too quiet. Although it's quiet compared to the likes of Manchester and Newcastle, I'd certainly say there's enough there for me so I'm thinking of putting Lancaster as first choice. I'd say sociolinguistics and discourse does interest me, though phonetics too aha! Difficult!
Thankyou!

Re: Is Lancaster a good university?I think that I'm now slightly biased for obvious reasons (and like the whole soul-taking business lol! Evil 9gag u_u), but I think you can't go wrong with Lancaster if you're interested in sociolinguistics and discourse analysis(Original post by mancuniangirl)

Check the new league tables; Lancaster has lost its ranking in 85% of its subjects (Physics went from 6th to 20th!).....I think it has hit its peak and is going to decline over the next couple of years :/
