Mordred has confirmed as returning, by an older actor
    Spoiler:

Definitely, considering he's starring in all sorts of Hollywood films. Would have been nice to have got him back though. It does suggest its going to be a much longer gap this time around, 5 years possibly? It could make for some interesting stories.

Didn't realise TSR had a Merlin thread!

I will be furious if they skip the reveal with a time lapse. Perhaps that would be too dastardly even for TPTB of Merlin, who didn't really abandon the status quo until last series? Also going to miss Asa Butterfield in the role, I didn't watch the earlier episodes until recently and Mordred was a highlight!

    Welcome to the thread :hello:.

I'm going to miss Asa Butterfield as Mordred too . I wonder how much older they're making him? If it's not much older then perhaps Mordred has a very big role this series (as a smaller role may have fitted into Asa's schedule).
EDIT: Just looked at imdb and he's 23. He could easily pass for younger though.

Well, that still sounds like a big time difference! Maybe so Aithusa can grow up and he and Kilgharrah can have dragon fights. Not sure the CGI could cope! Yes, I think you're right in that he must have a big role this series. I almost wish they hadn't gone with the dragons plotline so we could have some more focussed character development without the need for a good vs evil plot straight off the bat. Series 4 was getting much better for that. Then again, I suppose it wouldn't be Arthurian legend without lots of battles!

It certainly does! Perhaps this series will have a bigger time jump. That is a very good point; if the time jump is bigger Aithusa can grow up a bit. I'm still not sure whether Aithusa is good or bad or a bit of both. Kilgarrah is a complicated character so I'm hoping Aithusa will be too (instead of just an entirely evil dragon that helps Morgana). I agree that it was nice to see more character development in series 4. I think Arthur went through a lot of mental battles rather than physical battles. I'm guessing Mordred will join Morgana and together they'll be the 'evil' force. Mordred knows about Merlin's magic too so that could be interesting. If Morgana finds out that Emrys is Merlin she could do a lot of damage with the information.

Yeah, I think they make go with blanket evil for Aithusa, but it'll never be believable as he was just too darn cute! I forgot Mordred knows as well! Doubt he'd tell Morgana though. There needs to be a reveal already though, because it's already going to take hours for Merlin to get through everything!

Ooh, have you seen the Oblivious Arthur meme? You probably have, but it's pretty awesome.

You're probably right. Kilgarrah did say a white dragon boded well though. Unless Aithusa ends up evil because of being around Morgana. He was so cute! I think he would only tell Morgana if he stood to gain something. We don't really know what adult Mordred will be like but child Mordred wasn't a huge Merlin fan when they last met. I hope they do the reveal in either the opening episodes of series 5 or before episode 4 so we get at least one series of post-reveal development. I think the show will have a limited shelf life after the reveal as it's the natural climax of the whole story.

    I have; I love them :p:.

This is one of my favourites .

Oh my word. There is a Merlin group. Fantastic! (obviously) I love merlin...cannot wait for series 5, it should be on TV around my birthday.

Does anybody else here think series 2 was (by a substantial amount) the worst series of Merlin? So far most of the people I have spoke to have disagreed with me!

I liked it at the time but now you say that and I look back on it, it seemed like a lot of filler. I don't think it was as strong as the other serieses. Although "The fires of idirsholas" was a brilliant episode.

Exactly, there were quite a few episodes which added nothing to the story line and were, quite frankly silly! However the last episodes were better. Much prefered the darker series (even though season 1 seemed darker than 2).

Agree, I think the first few episodes are just a general wind in to the new series and towards the end, all the strong episodes are coming out. After the opening episode(s) I can hardly think of any early series episode that would really amaze me.

I thought the 1st half was a lot better than the 2nd half and the mordred-druid episodes were very messed up,3 and 11.

I actually didn't think that the first episode was that brilliant considering it's the start of the brand new series and everything! My parents are having a dinner party tonight and I am not invited so it might be time to have a bumper merlin marathon in my room tonight and i'll watch series 2. I will let you know what I think of the later episodes (I last watched series 2 when the DVD came out) when I have watched all the episodes!

I think Merlin's in for an early start because of Doctor Who being on late.25th August or 1st September are my estimates.

    Re: Merlin!
Lancelot and Guinevere, The Fires of Idirsholas and The Last Dragonlord were the only episodes that I thought were fantastic. The Beauty and the Beast (both episodes), The Curse of Cornelius Sigan and Sweet Dreams were all unremakable.

    Onto series three! :cookie:
