I've met a few Italians in the UK, including my driving instructor; all have been seething with rage that Berlusconi is still in power. Hopefully he'll die soon :colonhash:

Italians in general are nice people, if hot-headed in comparison to us Brits who just moan without actually doing anything. Italy is somewhere I'd love to visit - particularly Florance/Firenze. However, I must admit that I'm much more of a Hispanophile than anything else - Spain is my favourite Romance country. Sorry Italy!

I rolled up at a hostel in Dublin one night having driven from Connemara, and was feeling pretty jaded. There were no beds free and no receptionist, but these Italian students were having a leaving party for one of their number - about 20 of them. I turn up all travel-worn and they welcomed me with open arms: "Here, come and sit with us, have some pasta - and here's a piece of cake for when you finish that. Where are you from, ah don't worry about the receptionist, you can stay with us...." etc etc  They were brilliant.

The old politics is a bit murky though, for sure.

I am Italian and have been travelling a lot in the UK in the last two years. It's in the UK that i noticed how most stereotype (which generally shouldn't be taken into consideration by educated people) are quite strong and people believe in them. The classic example is of a somewhat loud eating-addicted people that is very friendly but dangerous (mafia is often associated to italians), whose diet is composed by pasta and pizza and nothing more. I read on internet also that some american consider italian people to be a sort of bleached black people, and people from northern european country generally consider themselves to be kinda more evolved while italians would be ignorant uncivilezed smiling cooks breeding chicken in the street and sharing the bedroom with a donkey. Frankly I don't like my people myself, but not for these reasons. The problem in Italy is that we have been brainwashed by televisions and newspapers who have been taken over by our current prime minister to do a lot of propaganda. So now things are going very bad and people don't do anything because they don't even realize what's happening. They've become lazy and a few italians look for the actual truth (for ex. on internet) and try to do something to change this horrible situation. Our government is ruled illegally by thieves who control the police and use it against the people, passing the smile of the prime minister in front of the sun and the palaces of florence venice rome and so on. We are a people who has great possibilities and skills to use in most arenas, and it's been demonstrated in the past, the main problem is that we have been always ruled by foreign powers and have problems to feel the importance of certain political matters. In italy there's not a sense of belonging and people are not educated to take care of their nation, in fact in general we tend to be very local. But beside these matters there are still a lot of great persons, who have always to flee in other countries. I wrote all of these informations to avoid some "unaware" people to start insulting in a racist way without knowing the actual problems.

I just think of world war 2 and how they changed sides and betrayed Germany this makes me very angry but apart from that they seem to harbour the most racist community in Europe.

hang on this has always been misunderstood. Italians didn't actually changed side. Especially in the north there was what was called "la Resistenza" (socialists hiding in the countrisides and fighting against the fascists, who were basically the ruling class so a smaller amount of people, and the germans) actually most italians didn't like fascism but where imposed to respect the dictatorship by mussolini's police. when the americans arrived the fascists didn't change side, just finally the socialists overrun them by being helped by the americans. about the racism, i'll tell you that we didn't have race laws until hitler started to be dangerous and mussolini was scared by him and wanted to please him. we are a very mixed ethnic group and always been friendly and welcoming. Nowadays THERE ARE JUST RACIST PARTIES TRYING TO PUT PEOPLE AGAINST IMMIGRANTs NOT TO ADMIT THAT THE SITUATION OF ITALY IS DUE TO OUR GOVERMENT. and ignorant people believe it but it's not a general tendency.

I dont think there ever was a time when Italy was ruled by the people.

During Roman times it was the senate and its legions ruling them all.

The good thing about Italy is that they have the best national anthem in the world...it keeps on coming on the tv adverts. I think its called ‘Go compare!’.

Italian people? Very freindly, generous, bit traditional, generally good cooks.

From my experience.
Like the food init
sarsi

Some of the Italian restaurants are also expensive (15 Euro's for a plate of spaghetti with 2 prawns), the Chinese restaurants though are quite cheap and generally better :p:.

But have you just been to the touristy places like Florence, Rome, Venice and central restaurants? Getting off the beaten track in Italy I've found good quality food to be available very cheaply. What is most expensive it would seem is electronics!

Only Rome because it was big. I don't think Italians like electronics :o:
