Fair enough. I know in A-level they have a bit that's supposed to be proofs but it's really just showing two sides of an equation are the same thing by using trig identities, there's no induction or contradiction or whatever.

Does further maths include them? Would be weird if A level left out proof altogether :s-smilie:

It wasn't in AQA FP1 when I did it. Or FP4. But this was 5 years ago now

This is an idea I have been interested in also, I was wondering for those of you who didn't take 1008 if you found you were able to pick it up on the fly ok?

I'll use a paraphrased comment from the head of the maths departments to sum up MT1008

"We're currently reviewing the usefulness of the courses existence" Wasn't exactly what he said but he made it pretty clear he didn't think much of it :p:

Ha, very good, I won't worry about that eventuality then. So are y'all gonna join chaosoc? Or is that too geeky?
I didn't join last year as I thought I wouldn't be sticking around in maths but I think i'll consider it this year :p:

me and a few mates were discussing the possibility of a coup d'etat on chaosoc, to turn it from its current geeky form, into a maths drinking club.

NB. this is highly unlikely to happen

What's it like at the moment?

Couldn't you just form a new one? I'm totally up for that.

dunno, as far as i know the only social event they run is an annual christmas dinner. I think they also arrange the printing of all the maths hoodies you see some people wearing;

'not all mathematicians are geeks, let me prove it to you' etc.

Oh yeah, seen them about. I think i'll see what they have to say at the freshers fayre if I can be bothered...

Quantum Soc may have me with unrealistic expectations of what subject societies should be. Laserquest + trip to cern wasn't bad.

Chaosoc needs a kick up the arse, it's rubbish. I think I might just put a poster on the noticeboard this year for a maths pub crawl.

MT1008 is being reviewed because John O'Connor has retired and he basically ran the course.

I reckon if we could get enough people involved a maths pub crawl would probably be banter, there seems to be little to no socialising of maths students so would be best to try and encourage this.
Maths pub crawl sounds like a great idea. I'm in. I know chaosoc has been worse than crap in previous years but I think this year's committee might be an improvement. They're having a joint pub quiz with astrosoc (?) in freshers' week in, I think, the Vic. So maybe we shouldn't write them off just yet.

I am firmly up for maths-related drinking. Is quantum soc open to non-physicists? I would have loved to take some modules but no a-level in it. Fibonacci shots!

sorry, i should have specified, edexcel does it, not sure about aqa
Quantum soc is open to non-physicists yes. I don't think any university affiliated society discriminates in any way on subject or gender etc.
My only involvement in Chaosoc is going to their quiz session where they have teams of pure, applied and stats lecturers... and maybe a team of students as well, I can't remember. It's usually pretty funny
