I use Microsoft Outlook, and use IMAP rather than POP. These are the settings:

Incoming mail server: imap4.nottingham.ac.uk
Outgoing mail server: smtp.nottingham.ac.uk

Just to note that, unless I'm mistaken, the Nottingham SMTP server can only be used on the UoN networks, e.g. their wireless, SNS in halls, or libraries etc. You'll have to use your own SMTP server at home.

You can copy and paste the URL (http://owa.nottingham.ac.uk) into Outlook to set up an Exchange account somewhere though, which will allow you to send/receive without the need for a second SMTP server.

Address is imap4.nottingham.ac.uk port 993
Username is ad\{yourUsernameHere} (without @nottingham.ac.uk
Password is your password
Make sure you're using SSL.

Read my above post for SMTP. I just use GoogleMail's SMTP servers.

I'd normally pull these details from somewhere but IS are updating their website and don't have any email documentation on there just yet.

I'll see if I can dig out the Exchange server address. It would be more useful if only for being able to send email without using your own SMTP server (not that it really makes a difference).
Slightly off topic, but does anyone know how to set it up so you can send emails from your uni account on a blackberry? I can receive emails but I can't send them.

There used to be a PDF with instructions on how to set up your account with Outlook and Exchange. It's no longer available but I found a copy of it here: http://www.docstoc.com/docs/22647265/university-email

The Exchange server is VUIEXCH1.ad.nottingham.ac.uk
