What events were you looking at? I was thinking Beach BBQ, Live Wire, Comedy Club and a couple nights in with roomies depending on what everyone else is doing.
You don't really need to buy tickets before you arrive in all honesty. Most people don't and its usually fine as you can decide with your flatmates what you want to do when you arrive and then go down to the ticket office together.
I would really recommend the Beach BBQ, Population and Roar. Not sure what Live Wire will be like as its a new thing - but its definately worth trying! Freshers Mania and Freshers Ball are kind of not as good value for money - the bigger nights never seem to live up to expectations in my opinion!
I am getting tickets for the slumber party, beach party, population intro party, roar animal party and freshers mania. but this is after speaking to a flatmate I found on facebook and agreeing what to order!
Agree with molly on nights suggested, population last year started becoming really popular throughout the year. Freshersmania is better than the ball though. I stupidly went to ball in freshers and think the ticket was something like 20 odd quid.
Population is generally chart music, with a few cheesy pop tunes thrown in as well. Always packed in freshers week, you get the odd guest appearance by someone vaguely famous too
What sort of stuff can we expect in Population? Music wise, dressing, atmosphere, events?
Charty Stuff, erm anything, really ANYTHING... most guys just wear jeans t-shirt/shirt, freshers week atmosphere is lively everywhere, remember with events don't just stick to the union try other places too(there are plenty of them) pretty much every bar and club in Sheffield will be offering free this, that's and what nots; just look for people flyering the union tends to just overcharge massively for freshers week and the nights aren't any different to the ones which run every night the rest of the year.
What's wrong with the fresher's ball, aside from the cost?
Usually its just kind of tacky really. Marriage booth, casino areas and then not much dancing going on. It just has an air of lameness to be honest. It sounds harsh, but really I don't know anyone who has come back and thought they had a decent night.
I bought my freshers ball ticket online yesterday, judging by the posts I'm beginning to regret it.
Wait until you actually get there and judge for yourself. A couple of negative opinions from strangers are just that - a couple of (possibly fairly irrelevant) opinions.

Yeah fair point.
Does anyone know how easy it would be to sell if I didn't fancy going?
