English application (& the nightlife)

Hey there! I'm thinking of applying to Exeter for English Literature, but I only have a B in English Lit. A-level. I do also have an A in English Language, and A's in Maths and Geography. What are my chances, do you think? How many cases have there been where people have been accepted with less than an A? (they didn't give me an offer this time last year, so perhaps I'm wasting a space this year again... the only difference is that I didn't have my English Language A-level then - I spent one extra year in sixth form doing that and only that, heh)

Also, I hear Exeter's pretty quiet and low-key on the nightlife side of things i.e. people just hanging out and chatting in pubs. That sounds ok, but once in a while, a good drum n bass night at a club is just what the doctor ordered to let the old hair down, if you know what I mean!

Any thoughts? (would be much appreciated)

Are you re-taking English A level this year then? If you are, you could get a conditional offer based on you getting an A. I don't know anyone who's got less than an A on the single honours course - sorry :frown:

Nah, I'm not re-taking... and hmm that kinda sucks. It's not my first choice place to go (I like the look of Cardiff better), but I think I might apply there as well, just in case. hehe, thanks

Cardiff is AAB aswell with the A in English I believe?

I heard the nightlife wasn't all that before i got here, but thats just down to things like this misguiding people!!

Monday - arena / rococcos depending on where you feel like going, arena does good deals on cocktails and shots

Tuesday - arena, though we normally stay in to prepare for....

Wednesday - amber rooms, then timepiece - its the sports socs nights so everyones drunk and up for a laugh the musics the type to get drunk, dance and sing along to, and timepiece does the best burgers in the world outside, no joke!

Thursday - warehouse, 3 rooms, tho the queues for the bar are normally quite busy

Friday - 'rock and indie' night in timepiece, actually a really good night
the imperial, absolutely massive & normally really busy on a friday
the lemmy - normally something going on, i.e gigs/concerts/guest djs

Saturdays normally pretty dead, the weekends are generally for catching up on work/sleep, getting over your hangover, or going home.

So there we have it! Whoever said there was never anything going on in exeter then i begin to wonder if they ever go out.

i don't know much about the english course, though i do know its a lot of reading (my friends just doing a literature module to make up her credits, and has spent the week in her room reading 200 pages of this thing that doesn't make sense!) x

Hey,

I was thinking EXACTLY the same as you cos I want to apply to Exeter to do English Lit, but am also a little worried cos even though i'm getting As in english and have am taking an AEA in english- i'm not too good with the rest of my subjects- like i'll probably get AABB at AS and that if i'm lucky, and i was like  when I saw what they expect- 3 As.

Also- the nightlife I was also concerned about- like there not being much of it and generally being a pretty dull social atmosphere- HOWEVER, i've spoken to some people and they say it's not too bad- but I suppose doing english means i'd be in my room lots of the time reading!! I can just see the social life drifting away :frown: . However, I guess you go to Uni to work- not to socialise predominently..

My friend does English and Film and she still manages to find time to go out! You only have 8 hours of lectures/seminars a week so you have plenty of time to read during the day then you can do what you like at night. After Freshers Week you will prob only go out 2 or 3 nights a week anyway so you always have plenty of time. The nightlife isn't amazing (having just spent the weekend in Cardiff, Exeter is pretty shabby compared to it!), but the student nights are really cheap and good fun, and there is something to suit every taste!

Considering I'm a bit of a loser, are there like quiet pubs and stuff? I mean are there things to do if you don't want to get drunk every night?
Haha, English students are the biggest slackers! (at most universities). People will hate you during the first year as you'll have very little work.

The thing about Exeter is though it doesn't have any huge superclubs (its a mix of cheesy clubs and small indie/rock venues), there are very active student organisations on campus that cater for lots of different things. If you like Rock or Indie music, there's catfish and rocksoc respectively, which run regular nights out, as well as campus bands if you want to form your own; there's various religious societies that run retreats and church events/lunches/film nights (if you're into that); there's film screenings, souk nights, theatre trips, balls, hikes, concerts, debates, netgamer parties (?!), art classes, etc etc. Not to mention the sports scene (Exeter is in the top 10 in the BUSA league).

There's a club night every day of the week, which people seem to enjoy though it can by no means rival big cities. The university also holds regular gigs with decent names playing. There are also loads of pubs and bars, some quiet, some not. The quay and cathedral area has some great pubs. I like the Double Locks (a bit further away) and The Mill on the Exe, both great for sitting outside and having a few drinks in the summer. Also, ye olde style Ship Inn and The Well House are good, and are reasonably quiet much of the time.

Well, that all sounds encouraging- it sounds really fun- one of my best friend's brother is doing english here and seems to enjoy it, but at the mo, my teahcers are trying to get me to look at oxford and i feel that college life there might be a bit insular- plus there's a lot more girls at exter than there would be in an oxford college (only a very minor reason for applying there, of course!!

aww, i'm sure you're really not a loser- i don't like going to massive big clubs cos i get lost in them and i hate getting drunk too- so you wouldn't be alone!!

Well if you apply for the catered halls of residence (holland, lopes, hope, mardon, the new birks, and duryard if it's still standing!) then you will have your own personal hall bar, where you can just go and sit and have a quiet drink. Also there are loooaaads of pubs and bars in town, there is a bigger scene for this kind of thing than for clubs. Also, there are loads of restaurants, a cinema in the middle of town (about 10-15 walk from uni), a bowling place but that's a bit of a trek...
can't think of much more but I'm sure some people can add stuff!
Apparently Duryard will be gone by next summer (thank god!)
Yeh I've heard they have been saying that for years though? I suppose if the new halls aren't finished by september then they will have to use the yard again. Who knows!
