I went to the open day with one of my mates, and we thought it was very good. The Biology course looked fantastic, and it was all well organised. However, we went down early on Friday night and stayed in Portland Street - but there seemed to be absolutely no nightlife - were we just in the wrong place?

Anyhow, did anyone take the IT tour? It was incredible - rooms full of supercomputers and processors worth millions, not to mention the VR labs!

No night live on a friday night!!!! The pubs n Portland street can be a bit chavvy, you should have gone near the university or Deansgate where most the clubs and bars are.

There is 600 licences pubs, restuarents and clubs in the city centre :smile:

, hoped that was the case. Was sure we were in the wrong place Friday, but we had no idea where to go - we only found out where all the decent place were at the end of the open day on Saturday!

Its a big city, its nothing like as spread out as London but its not as compact as London so you can wonder aimlessly trying to find the night spot, there is more than one though. There is mainly Oxford Road and Deansgate but Deansgate covers a huge area.

There is also canal street there are some good bars round there, but you wouldn't want to pull their unless you're gay :biggrin:

What kind of places were you looking for anyway? A lot of the best night clubs tend to be very well hidden.

We couldn't really be bothered with clubs (well, not the boom-boom techno type ones anyway), so we were just looking for a nice bar/pub with a good atmosphere. We saw one on Oxford Road (the one with the green neons that said 'homes4u'), but it looked packed so we gave up and just wondered around and about until about 1am ish, then headed back to the hotel. At least we got to see the city though! And the tram system looked cool. Was told that all the best places were nearer to the student accommodation (Fallowfield?), but only found that out Saturday! :p:

I wound't know about Fallowfield, thats for all the younger students, but they are plenty of good bars in the city centre. The bar you saw was Kro 2 which is a big bar.

There are lot of good indie clubs (which are cheap) but they are busy at weekends, I think Deansgate is probably what you were looking for.

The Tram system is good but it dosn't serve the student parts of the city which means you have to make do with the buses, we do have the most regular bus services in Europe if not the world but it still takes a good 20 minutes to get 2 miles up the road in rush hour.

KRO 2, that rings a bell now. Deansgate sounds more like my kind of place then, would have liked to have seen it but nevermind. Was amazed that a week's ticket on the buses cost £2 for unlimited use, and 'The Curry Mile' sounded particularly appealing!

Yep but be warned that those buses are crowded and slow, and you can only use it for Wilmslow Road, the stagecoach tickets cover the all of South and East Manchester but cost a lot more.

The £2 ticket will do for a lot of things though.
