Thats almost like saying 'what's the point of culture?'. Its what people do. Think of it as 'high culture'- but whereas pop culture is mostly about entertainment, high art is often an expression of a philosophy.
Its a tradion that people have been participating in for hundreds of years, people participate in it because they think they may have something to contribute and communicate.

There are many different points to producing art- commentry on aspects of life, as an expression of a philosophy (as said), self expression (art can be theraputic), and much of the 20th century avant gardes had political and social upheaval as their main objective (achieving little success).

studying art should increase your appreciation of it, because by practicing it and learning about its histories you understand the discipline better. Art does not exist in a vaccuum, and always acknowledges its past, there certain 'rules' in art and references in works you would not understand if you had never done any research in to the subject.

a nice depressive twist on it
Art = imagination = advancements in all areas.

art for art's sake

For amusement and enjoyment, something to help people relax. Stimulates your mind

It doesn't really have a purpose, other than to make you think about it, make you consider things differently and just be interesting.

To be honest, an art degree has very few prospects... fine art at least. The design side has more. It's mainly just to further your development and interest. My boyfriend is doing a BA Fine Art and doesn't expect a job out of it, he only really wants to be an artist and accepts that it's very hard to be successful in that field, so will probably end up doing something unrelated to his degree. Of course you could go in to teaching.
what you're doing right now is ART mate! :h:
The same as the point of music, television, poetry, stories, plays, musicals, films, etc.

Not everyone's thing though. The only kind of art I like is the city at night photography.

Meh, that kind of thing.

It's just something to look at other than porn.

Picture says a thousand words, that sort of thing. Makes people think about whatever subject the artist wanted to invoke. Anyone would rather look at a pretty picture or hear a pretty song than read a tract of logic-based philosophy.

True. I mean it does have prospects. But that's the design side. The degree itself can be useful for that, but a lot of people who take it (from what I've seen, could be completely unrepresentative! lol) generally don't want to go in to that area, they more want to do gallery work/comissions etc. Obviously they don't have to, and often people change their mind.
