I am going to apply to 4 medical school unis, and one non-medical related uni in 2011. I am hoping to put biomedicine as my fifth choice, however as far as I can tell Newcastle is the only uni which will allow you to transfer from biomedical sciences into medicine after 1 year?

Any one know any other unis which will allow you to transfer from biomedical sciences to medicine after just one year?

Also, as a fifth option, is it better to put somewhere safe? Or should I just go for it, i.e put imperial down for biomedicine? Any advice on this fifth choice regarding biomedicine/biochemistry? Thanks

Put down biochem as a fifth option if you would be happy being a biochemist. If not, don't.

Sussex University have just started a Biomedical Science course (which is no different to my degree as far as I can tell). They offer a 1 year transfer (well an interview with BSMS anyway).

Biochem has sort of become an intermediate for applying to medicine/ dentistry now :/ so competition for that is pretty high aswell.

Not really. Science degrees are still under-populated

So Sussex lets you transfer from Biomedical sciences to medicine after 1 year providing you do well etc?

I thought it was just Oxbridge that do biomedical sciences interviews, I thought everywhere else they just give you an offer/rejection? Have Sussex introduced interviews for biomedical sciences this year?

Plus is there any other uni you know which lets you transfer after 1 year?

i think they mean that they offer you the oppertunity to be interviewed for medicine at their umbrella of BSMS.

Yes, that's what they do. And there isn't an interview for Biochem at Sussex.

I'd like to point out it's a damn fine Biochem degree as well

I dont understand what you mean by umbrella of BSMS? So say I do biomed/bio chem for 1 year, then if I wanted to transfer I would get interviewed? thanks

I know Leicester do, but its not wise, do you know how miniscule the chances are? You have to be the top 2, or even the best in the year, and even then its doubtful. Don't do it. Not as your fifth choice if you really want to do medicine.

Thanks for the response, I checked Leicester out however I am applying to Leicester as my medical school univeristy, hence I am not going to put that down for a fifth one.

Do you know anywhere which will let you convert from pharmacology to medicine after the first year?

You do realise when they say transfer what they actually mean is remote possibility of having an interview just like all the normal applicants. Then you would be considered along with all of the other applicants. However you have to be in the top 10 in the whole year averaging over 70%.

In general yes, but it depends where you apply; I'm sure we would all get onto Biomedical Sciences at the University of Bedfordshire, maybe not at Imperial.

Do you have to do biomedical sciences to be able to transfer or are there any other courses?

It's usually biomedical sciences, I think there might be somewhere ?Newcastle that does transfers from biomaterials.

Just to add to what Renal said, Newcastle do have a transfer after 1st year. 5 or 6 people are successful each year. You can transfer from biomed, biochem, genetics, microbiology & immunology, biotechnology, physiology and pharmacology. Even though they are all separate courses, for Phase 1 (1st year and the first semester of 2nd year) it is unspecialised and everyone studies the same thing. Anyone that applied for any of the courses mentioned above can apply for the transfer. This is the system for Newcastle, but I don't know about any of the other unis where transferring is a possibility.

SGUL also do it for biomed, but take 1-2 people a year.

It's not a definite route and it's not worth the effort compared to busting your balls doing A-Levels.

Just focus on your four medicine applications and don't accept anything less.

At Leicester they do something of the sort, but you transfer from the second year of biomed to the first year of med.
