No I meant what were the differences between.

WinXP (Home)
WinXP (Pro)
Win 2003
linux.

And someone has just said win2003 is not for home use. I use XP(Pro) as it has remote desktop.

My PC is in my bedroom. But when I come down to the living room, I remote desktop to my PC in my bedroom. You cant do that on Xp(Home). I have always wanted to try and remote desktop from say a mates house. But it seemed very hard to set up what with dynamic ip addressing or whatever it was.
XP Home is the same as XP Pro with the following things removed: The ability to join domains, Remote desktop connections, IIS

XP Media Centre is identical to XP Pro, but cannot join a domain after setup, and has the extra media applications.

Server 2003 has the ability to create/mirror domains, DNS, IIS and all the other servery things. Unlike XP, Server 2003 doesnt have a 10 connection limit.

Then theres the 2 x64 versions of XP Pro, one for AMD64's and one for Itaniums.

Wow PieMaster you know your Xp's
So in fact there are 5 versions!
Reply 47
5 main versions but theres always things like Xp Pro Service Pack 1/2 added in
XP Professional
XP Home
XP Media Centre 2004
XP Media Centre 2005
XP Tablet PC edition
XP Embeded
XP Limted Media (or whatever it was they did to please the EU)
XP x64-I (Came with a nasty yellow visual style)
XP x64-A
An there was one they made specifically for latin america, and no doubt i've missed another obvious one out

Then on the servers, theres:

Windows Server 2003 Standard
Windows Server 2003 Enterprise
Windows Server 2003 Web
Windows Server 2003 Datacentre
Small Business Server 2003

I don't want a metrosexual computer that looks "cute". I want a COMPUTER that I can upgrade. Its not what it looks like that counts - its whats on the inside that counts and lets face it... the mac mini is hardly spectacular. Now stop trolling this thread.

Fine then you don't want / need a mac, but many people do. While the mini isn't spectacular spec wise, it still gives as much speed as the average user would want, thanks for the Mac OS being much more efficecent than Windows.

Just yesterday I opened up a 180 mb Powerpoint presentation on a 1.3 Ghz Celeron M Laptop, it took about 5 - 10 minutes. I opened the same document on my 1.6 Ghz G5, it took about 25 seconds (reading from a USB stick, the Celeron has the file on Hard Disk). Both had the same amount of Ram.
Celerons dont count as PC's

Brilliant!

Just out of curiosity, how did you get a powerpoint to 180 mb?

Stop preaching your Mac crap!
Your fantastic comparison there is positively idiotic. Firstly, you're comparing a laptop to what I assume is a desktop. Secondly, you're comparing a Celeron with a lower clock speed than the G5 - which as many of your mac loving friends have stated many times (and that I was well aware of prior to any of this stupid debate) is pointless. The mac processors run with a RISC architecture meaning they do more per clock. Besides... the clock speed is irrelevant - even Intel has admitted that now and they invented it!

Thats a completely b*****ks comparison, so your point is completely irrelevant from the start. And finally, as PieMaster put it... Celerons don't count as processors.

Fool.

Right then, to get back on track - I need help building my first PC!

I've decided that, after a few weeks at uni, a computer would be very useful and having read numerous threads, everyone's confidence has rubbed off on me and I want to have a stab at building my own machine.

Basically, I want a computer with a large hard-drive, and the ability to use Word, Excel, browse the web, use Dreamweaver, play DVDs, copy CDs/DVDs and play Football Manager

I guess that this means I won't need an expensive graphics card, but, naturally, I would like the system to be fairly quick. My budget is £500, and this will have to include a monitor. I've looked at Ebuyer.com and Overclockers.co.uk as has been previously advised, but TBH I don't have a clue about compatibility, and don't really know where to start

(Obviously a machine that could be upgraded in the future would be benficial, too)

Oh, and no offense intended, but I don't want a Mac! :p:

Thanks, in advance
i'll price you up a system on ebuyer, same needs as me so it'll probably be a quite similar spec, give me 10 minutes

slightly over budget (I originally had it at £588 though)

AMD socket 939 board, which is more upgradeable than the 754-pin equivalent, it also allows (ive forgotten the name, damn!) well the RAM thing (supports two sticks more efficiently) somebody will tell you what its called...

only one stick of RAM at the moment, very easy to upgrade though when you have extra cash (if this is a fairly strict £500 budget)

15" tft monitor, i wanted to include a 17" but that made it too far over budget

80gb hard drive should be enough if you dont play many games

included a copy of Windows Xp, not sure if you need this, also included wireless keyboard+mouse, are these needed? also a fairly decent set of speakers, but i also dont know if these are necessary...im sure you will know somebody who can point you in the direction of a version of Microsoft Office

im sure this system isnt perfect, maybe somebody can suggest changes, also a reply from you on speakers/keyboard/etc would be useful

Thanks, punksamonkey

I've got XP at home, so I guess I can use that disk? I've noticed others being advised to get an alternative PSU and cooling system, but I'm not sure if this applies to my needs.
Keep the cooler, but definatly change that PSU. Find something with at least 18A on the +12v rail.

Would this do the job?
