You should have upgraded the motherboard, it's a just a cheap mATX.
Plus which extra ram did you get, the 1333mHZ?
and would have opted for a higher power supply for headroom. -
Re: Before buying PC please ask our advice first!
I'm making myself A gaming PC(Will use for everyday stuff as well but mainly speccing it for games) for Uni. This is my first build from scratch but I have messed about with/ fixed desktops before so I now how to install everything apart from power supply units and motherboards.
I'd like to keep the Main components of the PC at around 800 (things like optical drives or fans can run over)
I have a few options lined up so I would Appreciate it if you could tell me which one is better or provide me with alternatives and rate my build and tell me how you think it would fare both now and In future

Re: Before buying PC please ask our advice first! My bad I went out :/(Original post by Tyles)
What motherboard would you of got? - that is the cheapest and satisfyable.
Also the ram was 1333
Also, where is the power supply option, and what would you recommend (again cheapest please)
Please reply soon, cos i'll just cancel the order and do a new one..
Looking at them all, wouldn't get any of them, simply because they have cheaped out on the board and the other options. It's simply cos it's a mATX, your case is quite large, I don't get why they don't utilise it better with a ATX board which offers more performance overall and other support.
Ram should be 1600mHZ or higher, but you could deal with it.
After the cases, it's about £7 more.
If your really on the cheap, then the upgrade of motherboard would kinda be negligible, the last one gives usb 3.0, and upto 16gb ram but that's it. Plus the other more expensive 2 offer the use of the faster ram, so your motherboard will do the job and take the 1333mHz but not any higher. -
Re: Before buying PC please ask our advice first!3rd seems like a pretty good spec, 4th seems good price, but not modular.(Original post by theGeezus)
Yo people of TSR, may I ask for some opinions. Which PSU do you think I should buy:
Antec HGC-620W
Spoiler:Show
OCZ ModXStream (600w or 700w, only £5 difference)
Spoiler:Show
OCZ ZT Series [FULLY MODULAR]
Spoiler:Show
OCZ ZS Series
Spoiler:Show
Corsair Memory TX650W
Spoiler:Show
Or Anything you could recommend (something around 600w would be nice)
My build, incase you're interested: http://pcpartpicker.com/uk/p/a7CE
Getting the 700watt from the OCZ extreme is good if your going to expand in the future, it's got good headroom.
Get your motherboard from ebuyer and get a free arctic cooler, but check the bios is up to date with that board. -
Re: Before buying PC please ask our advice first!I would stay away from CiT personally, I hate them with a passion. That hard drive costs way too much and isn't worth it. You can get a 2TB drive for £85. Depends on your budget but if it comes to it I would get a cheaper Z77 motherboard and the 3570K just to stay up-to-date. No point in already being outdated. Antec 300 is a nice alternative case.(Original post by Wizzard1)

The corsair ram is perfectly fine, 2nd link gives me a case o.O
Definitely go for the Ivy-bridge, does a bit more power and it's more efficient.
Stay away from Cit, especially psu's which look like a good deal for the price, it's not even 80plus, you would get fluctuating power and it's bound to fail. Other option is far better, but it's expensive, can easily get a modular psu with the same power.

or

cheaper than the Asus version, personally the Sapphire will do pretty well.
1tb hard drive is way too expensive, green ones £74 off Scan and Seagate versions even cheaper and at £84 with 2tb.
Try this one http://www.scan.co.uk/products/asroc...b-dvi-d-hdmi-a
SRock Z77 Extreme 4 Intel Z77 Socket 1155 Motherboard
or look at Asus ones.
If your looking for a case+psu then look at these:

There used to be another 690II lite, but it seems it's probably out of stock. -

I found an Overclocked version of the Sapphire 7850's on amazon for about £10 more http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sapphire-112...=1H2L32BF45WPQ should I get that or do it myself? (I don't know how to overclock but I am willing to learn)
I Think I will go withe motherboard and cas+Psu you chose ( The USB 3.0 port, headphone port placement and features are really nice), Thanks for that.
The Black was chosen for speed Apparently the Greens are best used for storage(Backup) so I might keep that
Could you recommend any fans please? -

Firstly, the RAM is a 1.5v, this was the standard for Sandybridge line of processors (please correct me if this is wrong). It doesn't matter too much at all. BUT you may want to look to 1.65v.
This RAM is pretty much the fastest you'll find around for a 2x4gb 1600mhz, it was recently very well reviewed by CustomPC magazine, winning their benchmarks.
http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/1153...annel-ddr.html
Secondly, Ivybridge may not be worth an extra £10. If you do not intend to overclock your CPU, then you have made the right decision. The difference boils down to this, as the 3570k will not overclock as gracefully as the 2500k. Especially as you haven't even mentioned a heatsink/fan, (look up the "Hyper 212 EVO"), do not risk overclocking a 3570k on a stock cooler!Last edited by TkTk; 16-06-2012 at 07:26. -

Re: Before buying PC please ask our advice first!I'm not fully sure what you mean but 1.5V is definitely recommended for Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge processors. You shouldn't really use 1.65V (but some can be undervolted) - intel say it will cut down the life of your processor and motherboard by a fair amount.(Original post by TkTk)

Re: Before buying PC please ask our advice first!
Hey, I'm thinking of getting a 13' macbook pro, but I'm not sure if the new model is worth the extra money as I've been offered the previous model for £650 (+£49 for Apple Care), but could get the newer one for around £849 (again +£49 for Apple Care). So in a nutshell, are the new features worth the extra £200?
Before I get negged to hell, I'm not getting a Macbook because I think it's superior or am oblivious to it's inflated price tag, but because I've worked seriously hard to earn it as a university present

Re: Before buying PC please ask our advice first!1. I don't think you should really be getting a Macbook because you worked hard for it. The reason 'getting a Macbook because I think it's superior' IS the reason to get one - or at least superior for your needs(Original post by confused dot com)

£10 is decent extra just for Ivybridge, plus future updates will help push it and is far better overall to the Ivybridge. -
Re: Before buying PC please ask our advice first!Oh yeah, I got a pair of those in 2x2gb...........but getting the corsair is pretty good especially if you plan on getting a big aftermarket cooler, which can cause problems for the larger ram like g.skill.(Original post by Wizzard1)

Go for it, if it'll help, but in all honesty the 7850 will play anything on Ultra with good frame rates. Plus sometimes you can overclock your self, just depends on the software that comes with it, sometimes it will do it, itslef through a program and check if it works right. The issue is the extra heat and instability. Getting the 300R Corsair or something with fans on the side, you can have a intake fan and give it fresh air.
It's essentially the same as the previous motherboard but the Z77 series which should provide a bit extra on top.
which black component?
With fans, if you mean standard case fans..........then the arctic cooling f-12's, etc are a good deal and price. And different sizes like f-8's or f-9's.

Re: Before buying PC please ask our advice first!Well you shouldn't be paying more than £90 for a 6850 nor more than £75 for the crucial m4. If prices aren't great now just wait a week or two for things to go on sale again. If you're not bothered and you've got the money though, that's fine.(Original post by hamza7)
