The university off campus access won't make a huge difference to the running of it. It's more limited by the network than anything else.

I'd recommend sticking things like anti virus and productivity suites on (office, adobe etc)

Other than that just make sure you don't defrag it and it should work fine. There are other more in depth tweaks you can make, but that should have you running well

I can't wait to get myself one. Only reason I'm holding off is the prices have been plummeting recently and I'd like a 256gb at least. Not to mention the current lack of fundsk

There's a Kingston 256GB once on ebuyer for 99.99 just now. Just depends what you think of Kingston

I reckon prices will fall much more yet so I might hold off until Christmas time.

Ah, and I just saw the bit about lack of funds... oops! Christmas time, if the prices haven't fallen, it's always something you can suggest for a present
http://www.pcspecialist.co.uk/ used this its pretty good against other street prices. Made Laptop same specs as Alienware but wayy cheaper

And you'll save yourself about £200 from a better maker, you should also check up your course and modules and the software use.

Hey guys I'm back again.
My laptop looks like it's pretty dead now.

Budget: £500-£700

I need something that's going to last the entire 3 years of university, preferably more.
It needs to run the following with ease:

Photoshop CS6
Flash CS6

+ being able to run a graphics tablet at the same time.

I'm going to be casual gaming, programming, and using a variety of professional multimedia software.
I want Windows 7, not 8.

I am VERY appreciative of anyone's help.

Those are the best ones I could find, with a high end processor along with a high end gpu like the GT650M, unless your willing to settle for something less like an 3rd gen i5 and gt650m for a bit less?

This one should be smooth, and be very good graphically, but you could do better if you look at a i7 in terms of speed if your planning on doing loads of high end editing and multimedi software.

what kind of casual gaming?
http://www.laptopsdirect.co.uk/Lenovo_Z580_Windows_7_Laptop__M81D2UK/version.asp
more powerful processor, weaker gpu tho.

autocad for engineering..bf3 for gaming

My option should be perfectly fine than, it should do very well, though i7 can be worse for gaming slightly, but the hyperthreading technology will make things like autocad a lot smoother. The gt650m is the best you can get for your price.

Might consider this, http://www.medion.com/gb/electronics/prod/MEDION%C2%AE++AKOYA%C2%AE+P6815+15.6%22+Laptop+%28MD98061%29/30014011A1?category=notebook_15&recId=&wt_mc=gb.intern.m-shop.pro-pla.on-ma&wt_cc1=m-shop_topseller_notebook-1.333-mitte&wt_cc2=30014011A1&wt_cw=30.2.8&utm_source=Internetseite-intern&utm_medium=Kachel&utm_content=notebook_1.333-mitte&utm_campaign=Kategoriekachel-Hotspots&utm_term=30014011A1

Hey guys

you might wanna look at the above.

Medion is a subsidiary of Lenovo by the way, i would also recommend a cooling pad, as high end usage can get hot especially where your pushing the graphics card on laptops

Okay guys, I'm not the most computer literate. Only really know the basics.

I need a new PC, will be editing AVCHD using Adobe Premiere Pro + After Effects CS6. Videos will be uploaded to YouTube.

From what I understand, AVCHD is really CPU intensive. Basically I only know that I need an i7 with a minimum of 16GB of RAM. Also need minimum of two 7200rpm hard-drives. I could also do with making sure that it's an Nvidia graphics card due to the Mercury Playback Engine in CS6. There's a list of graphics cards on this link. Reading Adobe forums for recommendations etc they also talk about RAID configurations.

http://www.adobe.com/products/premiere/mercury-playback-engine.html

The main problem is that I'm not sure about cases, motherboards, CPU coolers, which type of RAM etc etc.

Ideal budget would be around £1000. I have a feeling this will need to be increased, so if it does then that's okay as long as it's not loads!

Thanks!

the base i7 with 4 cores and 8 threads is about £240, the higher end versions have 6 cores and 12 threads.
16gb of ram is fine, about £80 at 1600mHZ with heatsinks and branded.

What size hard drives? considered ssd as well for some files?

Case will depend on individual preference, obviously at a least midi tower or bigger, rest will be determined on the features you want it to have, such as loads of fan space, hdd holders, etc. and maybe its appearance?
Cpu cooler, also again, its preference, whether you want to overclock or for better temperature and lower noise.
Motherboard, best value is about £80 however doesn't have sli support, it depends what you want for the future.
Graphics is another issue, as the 5xx is dated now, so support should come with the new 6xx, which are far cheaper than Quadros, as they cost quite a bit more, its your preference again, whether you want a dedicated professional card or use a gaming one?

Never mind the gaming, I need this to be totally for my university work more than anything else, plus being on image-heavy websites.

I quite like the Samsung, are there any particular downsides to having that in regards to the high usage it's going to get with multimedia software?

From what i've heard some people have noticed lagging, but on games after an hour or so, caused by ventilation issues and overheating of the gpu.

So if I don't play any games that are demanding on the GPU and such, it'll run smoothly when I'm creating/editing on the multimedia software?

yeah it should run fine, but anyone else will tell you that you should get a cooling pad, especially when your doing such things, all laptops get hot over long use, but with i7's and dedicated graphics card even more so cos they produce a lot of heat.
