The only problem is that the laptop has its own eRecovery software with a hidden back partition. It won't work with NTFS. Stuck in between a rock and a hard place. And is my brothers as well. FFS damn you acer to hell!
I would do that, but my brother would be seriously peeved off. I dont understand why it doesn't come pre-ntfs file format.

Yep. The E6600 is one of the best processors on the market. Good midrange graphics card, plenty of RAM, looks fine.
Reply 925
Would the midrange graphics be inhibitory if using a DVI monitor?
Reply 926
oh and is the HDTV card beneficial in it's own right, or only used with an hd monitor?

The garphics card is fine to use with a DVI monitor and wont be inhibitory. As for HDTV, it doesnt matter since you wont be getting a HDTV trnasmission in the UK.

HDTV is merely highere resolution video, your monitor will support 1280x720 HD video.

Okay thanks for the info, I will cease this barrage of questions, for now:biggrin:

Beacuse Acer's restore utility hasn't changed for a good 5+ years.

Now you see why I hate Acer so very much... at least yours doesn't have an intermittent hardware fault too.

Find a normal OEM XP CD somewhere and install from that. You'll probably have to phone up to activate it.

I installed FEAR and it ran everything on medium/high no problem, even while heavy combat scenes, i did the elvel skip cheat!
The stupid thing is that the restore facility still hasnt been updated to NTFS as if upgrade whether thats clean install or conversion.
What hardware was that if you don't mind me asking?
I will leave it in my brother's hands and if he decides then i will do it for him. But comes with a heck of programs that suck the memory, on idle 460 MB on the page file and thats for all the acer arcade, bluetooth, webcam. et cetera.
I did read that converting to NTFS and installing a fresh OS means that get audio problems. I just want to know if I do this, can i go back as there are 3 partitions in fact, *special 3GB*, acer windows OS and acer data file, latter 2 55 GB respectively. If i image the 3GB *special*, which i dont know how as not a visible partition in My Computer, can i go back?

edit: I have 2 different keys, one with the installed OS and the one underneath?

The 7600 g has 256 dedicated memory and runs better than my 6600GT agpx8! So can't wait to try BF2 online.

The acer restore disks work even on a blank hard disk; you can nuke all the partitions and it will still install on it.

Couldnt you send it back if it was in warrenty? That sucks as more often than not the GPU is soldiered so couldnt even replace it if you wanted yourself.

I was thinking that when was i asleep, with regards to just deleting all partitions.
In my opinion very nice laptop BUT got loads of acer media centre spin-off software so 400MB page memory in use at all times
I was i two minds with buying a zepto 6615WD as i have asked couple days ago but the problem is the warrenty that having to pay to send it back to base and not having on site warrenty. My brother has the extended one with accidental damage for £99 which in my opinion is wirt in considering others have had acer problems.
Alright; this is what I have decided on finally.

It's from pcoption.co.uk and after some comments on Intel Core 2 Duo I made a few changes:

Motherboard: ASUS P5N32 SE SLI Deluxe (If you put SLI they automatically upgrade the PSU to match it free of charge).
Processor: E6600 Intel Core 2 Duo
Graphics Card: ASUS 7900GTX 512 Mb
Hard Disk: Samsung 250 Gb SATA2
RAM: Samsung 2 Gb DDR2 667 Mhz

It comes to around £930 (with shipping and VAT) I want this to be able to perform well because I will be doing a lot of Video Conversions/Editing etc. and also playing the latest games. My next upgrade won't be for another 2 years so it has to last well like my old PC.

How much was the upgrade to the 7900GTX? It probably isnt worth it. Also note that you havent got an SLI set up and therefore they havent upgraded the PSU. What they mean by SLI is where youve picked a set up with 2 x graphics card.

I need a cheap flat panel monitor for uni, either 17" or 19", which would be better?
I do need it to be able to display games well (cant be havin any of that ghosting) so i assume a respone time of 8ms would be suitable.
Am i right in assuming that using DVI would be better than VGA (15-pin)??

What do you think of these...

Im looking to pay £130 (inc VAT), £150 at a stretch.

Any suggestions???

Well, the 1st one is 17" and dont know anything about the warranty,

the second monitor is 19" and has a 3 year onsite warranty,

the third just looks ugly.

So the second i think.

edit: also the second monitor costs cheaper here http://www.overclockers.co.uk/acatalog/19_Inch_LCD_Monitors.html
I'm looking to build a computer for uni and these are my initial part choices, if anyone can see any problems with compatibility or has any better suggestionsI'd be grateful for the help.
