Wow, you managed to answer it all in one sentence lol.

So I should choose this:

Intel® Core™ 2 Duo E6300 Dual Core Processor(1.86GHz,2MB Cache,1066MHz)

Over this:

Intel® Pentium® D 945 Dual Core (3.4GHz,2x2MB Cache,800MHz)

Yes. How much more is it for the E6400?
Reply 1181
the E6300 upgrade is 15 pounds more and the E6400 is 60 pounds more than the pentium D 945.

Stick with the E6300 then.

Parallel ATA (PATA) is for older hard drives and most optical drives such as DVD-RWs (which arent readily available with SATA interfaces).

That spec looks fine except I'd consider getting a different processor...
That wont run vista in its full shiney glass mode, it doesnt have a graphics card even close to being fast enough.

PATA is the predecessor for SATA, it uses big ribbon cables to attach drives with. That slot will be used for connection the DVD-RW drive.

I wouldnt be looking at Pentium D's right now, Intel Core 2 Duo's are the latest and greatest offerings.

You really think so?

I couldn't find any PC with these specifications including security software, speakers and printer for that price.

Then you should get them seperately :P
Properly decent speakers can be had for £20, a printer for not much more (depending on what quality you want). Security software is easily available for free (as in, legally free).

I've built high-end gaming systems for less than that.

The "security software" OEMs provide is rubbish. Speakers arent too expensive to buy seperately, and neither are printers.

Try this:

Add the HP F380 printer, and this monitor: http://www.comet.co.uk/comet/html/cache/571_254860.html

Comes to £750.

Unfortunately good Core 2 Duo OEM PCs are few and far between.
Reply 1192
Nope, much over 750, you might want to recalculate that.

ive always looked at dell prices for comparing prices... everytime i create a pc thats similar to one of dells offer, i always find it cheaper to be building one on your own. However, their prices are reasonable if your not bothered assembling your own.

If thats what you feel is best, fair enough. I'm only giving advice, at the end of the day its your choice what to spend on.

Hi, what do you think about the above offer?
I'd like to use it mainly for university but also to do multimedial work (video/music creation/editing/publishing) and also experiment with OS' like ubuntu or suse.

Do you think it's okay, or should I wait for the "next generation"? (e.g. till Core 2 Duo becomes more affordable)

Thanks
