But right now I'm sooo snowed under with uni work... I doubt I'll have time to research all of the parts, check compatibility, etc..... :frown:

So this barebone system isn't a good idea?

Not this particular one.

Nope, not a good enough spec for that price.

Agreed.

So it comes with a mother board, processor, RAM, fan and case. Just to make sure, does this mean I have to buy the hard disk, graphics card, etc.... all by myself?

Yup.

Wow, youre paying one helluva premium for using 2 1 gig RAM sticks and an x1600 card.

The question is, are you seriously gonna play games on youre laptop? Even an x1600 is crap by todays standards, youre just paying through your nose for something of little benefit. And ditto for the RAM. Because they are having to use 2 x 1gig RAM sticks which are very expensive, its driving up the price.

Even considering that, it is seriously overpriced. However, i am perhaps unfairly biased against destop replacement laptops, as i always feel that you pay so much for such little performance. Basically, if i were you id think about what id use my laptop for.

Do you need to move it around? If so a 17" laptop which weighs 4kg and low battery life really will be inconvenient. If you simply want something for uni where you can play games watch video as well as do work, then why not consider a small factor form pc. If you are going to simple browse the internet and do normal work, multitask etc. Then simply go for a standard 15" laptop with a t7200 processor and integrated graphics.

edit: Even a 17" iMac with the same specs only costs £700 with a higher education discount. However, IMO the Apple imac range are the only apple computers worth getting.

A £400 price point for laptops tend to be very hard, since its too cheap for dual core but you paying a good 80% of a dual core laptop.

But otherwise, after looking around it isnt too bad. However, you can get a 60GB hard drive and 512MB RAM for the same price.

Something like this http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/118191 for example. I think Dell's Inspiron 1300 range are also similarly priced.

http://www.ebuyer.com/UK/product/115617 This is has a pentium M processor rather than a Celeron M but is the same price.

A six cell battery running for 5 hours on a 15" laptop? Something fishy is going on there.
