Can anybody advise me on how to do this? I would like to self-teach so just looking for some advice on steps I should take, i.e. learning the alphabet first, learning general words, learning grammar?

Also, how hard would you rate this as a language to learn?

I went to Crete on holiday during the Summer and felt so ignorant that I did not know a word of Greek and yet a lot of the locals could speak perfect English!

My dad lived in Greece for a while so he knows a bit. The alphabet is probably the first thing to learn, and it should only take a week or less as it's not too different to the Roman alphabet.

As to words, I guess you should learn "holiday phrases". Then learn grammar. Why not get a book like "Teach Yourself Greek"?

And difficulty? I don't know, as with any language, depends how good you are with languages generally. Be aware there are case endings etc, I believe.

Use www.livemocha.com I think Greek should be free to learn.
