Acoustical Engineering?
University course discussion for engineering.

Re: Acoustical Engineering?Hi, I applied to Surrey (although I secretly wanted a gap year) so when I didn't get in I started considering loads more options for 2012/2013. This came up as my favorite alternative. I'm not sure if I'd prefer Surrey or Soton atm. Also, would you say it's worth the ridiculous tuition fees, or can you think of any other options for this field of work?(Original post by Sam2301)
Just finished my first year doing it at Soton - PM me if you have any questions...? (exams are over and I'm bored!)

Re: Acoustical Engineering?Assume you're looking at the Tonmeister course at Surrey? Don't know much about it but if it's mostly music technology/production you're looking for then you'll find hardly any of that on my course! It's very close to doing a mechanical engineering degree - the only difference being we take modules more specialised to acoustics/vibration along with your standard maths, fluid mechanics, programming etc. Oh, and you get an awesome second year project where you design and build your very own loudspeaker!(Original post by AlexClarkey)

Re: Acoustical Engineering?
I was at the visit day too, (Hi Alex, it's Dan) and the interview was really informal - they told us beforehand that you wouldn't be judged on your *performance* in the interview, just your interests etc. Can only talk from my perspective, but the guy I was talking too was really nice, with no difficult acoustics questions :P only asking how you found out about the course, and what most interests you in the field.
Entry reqs are ABB with A in Maths / Physics typically, they may change them for your personal offer, but i've heard nothing from them yet? hbu alex, your *interview* chat go ok? -
Re: Acoustical Engineering?
Im in Year 11, and decided i would like to go into acoustic engineering, from what i can see southamton looks best as its russel havnt actually seen it first hand yet.
cant decide what A Levels to go for what do you think?
Maths, Further Maths, Physics and Engineering (Btec)
or
Maths, Physics, Further Maths and Chemistry
or
Maths, Physics, Biology, Chemistry
????? its comfusing me :P -
Re: Acoustical Engineering?
As long as you do maths and physics, you'll be fine.
But from what I hear, it's a mathematical subject, so further maths might help you when you're there.
Apart from that, it doesn't matter what the other one is. Engineering is probably more relevant to the course, but chemistry and biology are both interesting A levels that will look great on your application and show that you're clever and interested in the right things.
Basically any of those will be fine, pick which ever subjects you're more interested in

Re: Acoustical Engineering?Think this combo is best, but really they only care about Maths. But F. Maths helps because they blitz over complex numbers in your first term so it's nice to have some understanding beforehand. Physics is also very very helpful and Chemistry is just a nice addition.(Original post by SJWestbrook95)
Maths, Physics, Further Maths and Chemistry
But as Alex says, any of those combinations will be fine. Just pick whatever you fancy! I mean I took Maths, Physics, Music and Art (Yeah yeah, Art, I know, I didn't know what course to do at the time and love Art!) and managed to get into a decent Uni. Just do whatever you want to do so long as it contains Maths!
Oh! And for others that are looking into Acoustical Engineering - I'm currently studying Audio & Media Engineering at the University of Surrey. I think that may be relevant to people's interests as well so feel free to PM me about the course if you put it to consideration

Re: Acoustical Engineering?
@SJwestbrook I asked the admissions tutor at an open day which of computing and chemistry I should choose (was getting good grades in both) and he said go for Comp as the chemistry is slightly less applicable (and is MUCH harder imo ) Your engineering BTEC will give you more background knowledge and would open some more doors to do work experience etc. Altogether, so long as you get plenty of maths in there and you can show a good amount of commitment to the subject they'll like you
Good Luck!

Re: Acoustical Engineering?
Haven't posted in here for a while, so I thought I'd update you

After getting my unconditional offer I accepted it as my firm choice, so I'm definitely studying acoustical eng at southampton.
I've just accepted my accommodation offer as well, so I'll be staying in monte 1.
Dan, you still doing this course? If so, how far through the application process are you?
Should be fun

Re: Acoustical Engineering?Yeah Alex, accepted that Southampton offer within about 10 minutes of it coming up, not all that worried about results day.(Original post by AlexClarkey)

What did you do to get an unconditional offer!? I've asked for Highfield Hall, it's catered and had good reviews from other folk I know at Soton.
Will update if I will be seeing you in September! -
Re: Acoustical Engineering?I did my A levels last year, then I took a gap year. So I already had all the grades they wanted (AAB in Maths, Music Tech, and Physics respectively).(Original post by Acoustics)

Re: Acoustical Engineering?
Hi,
So since about Year 9 i've been completely set on studying MEng Acoustical Engineering at Southampton! I even used to e-mail the admissions officer and head of the course about the best A-Level combinations etc.
I've just got my AS results :- Maths A
F.Maths B
Physics B
Music B
They're much better than what I was expecting although not as good as I know I'm capable of. My predicted grades were straight A's and should be for next year aswell.
I've had a lot of trouble deciding what else to apply for aswell, i've decided on Electronic Engineering courses and the Tonemeister course to fill up my UCAS form! It is frustrating though because i know that Soton is where i REALLY want to end up! -
Re: Acoustical Engineering?Sweet man, nice grades(Original post by Acoustics)
I'm in!
A* A* A A in Physics, Computing, Maths and Further Maths. Feels great
Hope to see you in class
