    Severe Depression
I've felt extremely depressed since I was about 14. There is a history of it in my family. I've recently dropped out of uni at the end of second year, and I don't have a job. My life is very uneventful and miserable at the moment, I rarely go out with friends, and even when I do I don't get any enjoyment out of it, I just sit there and force laughter and that just to fit in. I feel extremely hopeless at the moment as if there isn't much point to my life. Are there any techniques to alleviate depression, or is there anyone who can help?

First step is to go see a doctor.

If you can't cope with uni you probably can't cope with a job, but sitting around doing nothing isn't going to make you feel better so perhaps try to find things to fill your time with. Learning an instrument or language for example.

I have recurrent quite severe depression and the best thing you should do is see a doctor and then they can refer you to a talk therapist and/or some medication to help alleviate the terrible feelings. It's best to go as soon as possible because these therapries and medication can take months to see improvement. Leaving it is just delaying your recovery and giving time for your condition to possibly deteriorate further.

I'm depressed, fell out with my dad with the amount of hours I should be working. He says that year 2 in uni is 'harder' and so I should 'spend more time revising'.

    Sick of this. Depressed.

But my advice to you is move on, there are countless opportunies across the world. You should seek them out, perhaps get involved in some charity work.

This forum can do nothing for you. You need to see a doctor they are the only ones that can really help you.

Um hello. I did give you some advice. That guy who posted after me is not truly depressed. It's not something you can just "move on" from.
Have you been to the doctor yet?

From what you say you definitely sound like you have a proper case of depression (I know I'm not a psychiatrist but from studying Psychology I know of the different symptoms of depression and how long you should have them for before someone can clinically diagnose you as depressed). First things first, either speak to a family member or someone you trust and tell them you're feeling so low. I know this is easier said than done but by confiding in them you won't have to deal with recovery alone and in the future if you happen to get depression again you've got people ready to give you support. Secondly, go to a doctor and talk to them about it as they can advise what's best for you, whether to give you anti-depressants and nothing else or prescribe them as well as some kind of counsellor or therapist, or they may think the latter is just best. Just don't suffer in silence whatever you do, if you need help then get help, which again I know is easier said than done but you won't regret it once you've gotten over it.

    Hope you recover well

Phone up tomorrow morning and make an appointment with your doctor - you need to get proper professional help. If the doctor starts you on tablets, don't be surprised if they don't make much difference for at least 4-6 weeks; nonetheless, tablets can be very effective. Your doctor may also refer you to a counsellor, psycologist or psychiatrist.
