Re: I've only been in Cambridge 5 minutes and I've already been asked for money 3 timesSorry but my language is not sarcasm. I always ignore those beggars, its not wrong to be worried sometimes you know.(Original post by psychocustard)
Ok, if you really are going to study in the UK, you need to try and understand sarcasm >_<
I've never given money to someone begging, I'd rather give the money to homeless charities and such. It really winds me up when someone stops you, tells you some sob story and tries to wangle £1 out of you, though ¬_¬
no need to be harsh.

Re: I've only been in Cambridge 5 minutes and I've already been asked for money 3 times
some guy stands near a bus station, and he has a made up story about a car crash, and his brother going into casualty and having no money to get home for the bus fare... and he asks people for money and they generally give it because his story seems genuine

Re: I've only been in Cambridge 5 minutes and I've already been asked for money 3 timesBut what I'm say is that it's very, very rare anything like that happens, and it's just scaremongering.(Original post by kristinaalovesu)

But seriously, learn sarcasm. You'll need it. -
Re: I've only been in Cambridge 5 minutes and I've already been asked for money 3 times
My logic is that they probably need my 50p or whatever more than I do and even if there are 5 phoneys for every "real" one, it's acceptable odds to give to everyone. It could be making the difference for someone much worse off than me.
There are a fair few in Cambridge and at least one talented busker/beggar. Once a friend of mine got asked for money for a train fair and, seeing as he was going to the station anyway offered to buy him a ticket in person when he got there. The chap was less than enthusiastic

Have you been to Glasgow? A man asked me for a handjob just outside queen street station!
Its almost like the inbetweeners "geez a blow job" -
Re: I've only been in Cambridge 5 minutes and I've already been asked for money 3 times
Kinda off topic, but have any of you seen the amazing big issue guy in cambridge? Once I had the following exchange with him.
"Do you want a Big Issue?"
"Nope, I already have one"
"Well buy two, and read it in STEREO!"
I was very tempted to buy one just because of that. -
Re: I've only been in Cambridge 5 minutes and I've already been asked for money 3 timesWay more scope for begging in Edinburgh...(Original post by LGF92)
Weirdly, I've seen one homeless person in St Andrews. As one of the deans put it, "St Andrews is the only town where even the beggars where black tie" -
Re: I've only been in Cambridge 5 minutes and I've already been asked for money 3 times
I've been asked for money several times, but after living in Edinburgh for four years I barely notice. I do occasionally give some money, but again, I don't really think about it and it's not very memorable. I expect after a little time here you'll grow accustomed to it.

Re: I've only been in Cambridge 5 minutes and I've already been asked for money 3 timesLOL, how did you get into the red so fast?(Original post by Gemma :)!)
It really annoys me when people ask for money on the street. I don't have much myself (obviously more than them, but even so) but what's stopping them getting off the streets, stopping taking drugs, and getting a job.. It annoys me.
& before people go on about "omg they might be in really bad situations with death of people they love, or mental illnesses" I know that, but many people in everyday life go through this as well, so what separates the homeless beggars?
And your post is
stuff.

Re: I've only been in Cambridge 5 minutes and I've already been asked for money 3 times
Oh homeless people. Bless their little souls.
I was walking home from town and a hugely pregnant homeless woman jumped out at me from an alleyway, begging me for 20p because her 'baby was dead' and she wanted to get a pasty to keep her warm and cheer her up. I actually ran away. -
Re: I've only been in Cambridge 5 minutes and I've already been asked for money 3 timesIt annoys me when people oversimplify the ****** situations of others. Im pretty sure that if it was so easy to regain your life many people wouldnt beg.(Original post by Gemma :)!)

As for the second paragraph, I would say the major difference is perhaps that one group has money where as the other doesnt?
It's odd.
I know I shouldn't laugh
