Did you derive inspiration from my "German equivalent to Oxford and Cambridge"? :p:

I've heard that ENS in Paris is a good University there.
Don't think that the Sorbonne is the best. It's usually the Ecole Normale Superieure that heads the list.
The Sorbonne has really gone down in the last ten years, because so many are going abroad to study.

The Sorbonne is no longer world class.
The top institutions in France are the grandes écoles.
Their graduates dominate French industry and public life, just as Oxbridge graduates dominate UK's industry and public life.
Some of the top grandes écoles are :

École normale supérieure
particularly École Normale Supérieure in Paris
( Lyons and Cachan are good too )

For engineering:
École nationale des ponts et chaussées
and
École nationale supérieure des mines de Paris

For business:
École des hautes études commerciales (HEC Paris )
(edited 13 years ago)
In Engineering definitely Ecole Polytechnique (X) followed by Ecole Centrale Paris and the two above mentioned, (ISAE pour l'aviation)

Law: Pantheon-Assas

Political Science: Science-Po Paris
(edited 8 years ago)
It's more complicated than in the UK as Grande Ecole dominate over the universities and they are specialized in one era.

So I would say depending of your subject :
Science Po' Paris
Ecole Normal Supérieur
Polytechnique
Ecole Central de Paris
Panthéon-Assas
Dauphine (in financial mathematics)
Ecole des Mines de Paris
HEC
ESCP

Sorbonne is over rated by foreigner but has a really nice building (at least the main one). University of Paris does not exist since 1968.

you forgot Ecole Polytechnique, Sciences Po and the absolute elite: ENA

What would be a good French university to go to for ancient history?
What would be a good French university to go to for ancient history?

ENS. I'm not sure if it specialises in just ancient. Otherwise it would be Sorbonne.
Cleary, La Sorbonne (Paris 1), the most prestigious institution in France, it is first in Law, Politics, History, Geography etc. in the country.

Assas, as good as la Sorbonne in Law, since both universities coming from the same root, Faculté de Droit de l'Université de Paris. But it is less renowned in the other subjects.
ENS, no degree granted, it is actually a center for scientific research. Most of professors coming from the other universities such as la Sorbonne. They give lecture there, that is all. The students actually enrolled in the other universities.
ENA, Specialist School for becoming french functionary
Polytechnique, Specialist School in solo subject of engineering
SciencesPo, actually a specialist school for teaching International Public Management etc. The real political sciences only can be found at La Sorbonne.

The french GE students don't like this, But. It is just the truth.
