Hi,
I was a student at Queen Mary's Univeristy of London and HATE  the area, the staff and most of all the atmosphere! The admin staff there were horrible and possibly if students spent less time queing up to do paperwork for the university and more time learning then MAYBE...just maybe they would enjoy it there.
Everyone I've spoken to hates the university...my advice to u is dont bother applying there...try somewhere better and more friendly like other London uni's e.g. Kings, st georges, Imperial and UCL!!
Thank god I dropped out of that crap uni :woo:
Who here agrees with me??
If you are a student there please comment, u dont have 2 agree with my views!

how long were you a student for? i'm sorry you had such a bad time, but something about your post doesn't quite ring true.

i mean, you say everyone you've spoken to hates qmul, which is weird enough in itself, especially considering everyone i've met here so far is loving it. then you go on to say that kings, ucl and imperial are more friendly when they're not even campus universities :| regardless of that, how on earth would you know how friendly they are?

weird.

my experience so far has been fantastic! the campus is lovely, clean and modern. i love sitting in the cafe by the canal and the village shop is literally a minutes walk away from my flat and slap bang in the middle of the student village. everyone i've spoken to has been friendly, the staff have been overwhelmingly helpful, there are so many societies available (especially for law which is excellent for me ) ranging from sports and martial arts to anime and belly dancing...

are you sure we're talking about the same place?

Am a fresher at queen mary and so far it has not been completely bad.

Bad points that I have is the Mile End area, looks rubbish and it is not nice area (lots of dodgy people) but I am used to london being that but there is nothing much to do in Mile end, they have alot of chicken shops that are EXPENSIVE and last time I ate there I got sick. I don't trust them anymore anyways.
The university is boring, in your free time you can go to the bar (I dont drink) or the coffe shops, they have like 3 or 4 of those. Everything is pricey especially the canteen meal £3.55 without drink or cake. You need to pay £1 per game to play pool or foosball which is the only thing they have. Most of the clubs(societies) cost money and even the events do, they know how to drain your pocket. Sometimes we have to go to a place starting with G to do our lectures, only qmul students will know this one. Most of my lectures don't speak English well so that is not good at all. The lecture rooms I have been to so far are abit unconfortable and you have to lean forward to write due to the design (PP1). My timetable kind of sucks, no day off. There are too many Asians, they do too many scholarships from abroad but that is not that bad, I like diversity. They don't offer languages courses i.e I wanted to learn arabic but they dont have it as far as I know.
The admission is messed up, lots of btechers at queen mary, I feel like I wasted my time doing a-levels.

Good points: The place is Friendly, you don't see thugs or chavs in the campus. The teaching is good, you don't get much help so it is alot of individual work to be done. Presentations and lecture notes on the internet to download. The community is nice and there is no limit to what you can do but it is at a cost normally. We have our own computer room. close to stratford (Olymipics soon), there is many places you can go.
Two tube stations close the uni, stepney green and mile-end which is nice. Campus looks good apart from the ugly building currently being refurbished. Accomodation looks good but I live at home. Library is alright but is annoying when it says it has the books on the system but it's not on the shelf, also u need to renew every week :frown:
Canteen has nice food but at a price.
ITL is nice but has restricted access.
There is alot of support classes you can attend if required.
Some of the Tutors and Lectures I don't like because of their attitude and teaching skills but it is not too bad.
I think the university is good but for my course it is just average, maybe in law and medicine it is different.

Diddums, were you expecting everything to be free?

First of all, how can you moan about the amount of asians then go on to say that you like diversity in the uni?

If you don't like having to renew your books, buy them.

Oh, and a quick google search can tell you that QMUL does offer languages

Lol @ UCL and Imperial being more friendly. About the only university in London that outdoes those two for an abundance of unsociable middle class kids and rich foreign students who don't socialise with anyone but their own nationalities is LSE.

Also Mile End really isn't that bad I don't know where people are getting this idea from. In fact outside of Central I don't know anywhere in London where I feel as safe as in Mile End and Whitechapel.

This.

And trust us this is true, I currently study at UCL and have studied at LSE too. Queen Mary's has, overall, a much friendlier social environment and a lot less pretension.

However, to say that as a generalisation would also be somewhat false. From experience nonetheless as much as I love UCL I think that at a glance there are a lot of pretentious and socially withdrawn people there, who only mix with people of their own race.

I am not against this entirely as I know it must be hard for foreign students in a new place and country, and therefore they opt for familiarity. I don't however like the exclusionary tendecies that develop from it, and I think that at QM this was LESS of a problem (though QM is not entirely absent of it).

I don't think you should be so keen to seek solace from your own negative experiences of QM by trying to convert those on a student forum who otherwise may have given it a look and judged it on their own merits.

Bow is the best place in London to live. Anyone saying the latter is a posh-toff scared of the big bad city, or just ignorant (mostly the latter). Just because you've walked from Campus to budgens a few times doesn't mean you know Mile End.

And as has been mentioned numerous times, if you're one of those knobs who likes going out in central, it's only 15 minutes away, and if you're one of those trendy cool kids then shoreditch/brick lane/hoxton is only 5 minutes away.

I didn't even know Bow Tescos existed until about March. I feel my G credentials are rather lacking.

dude I still haven't seen you on campus.
How do you expect me to deliver you some major ass whooping if you keep hiding?
Kidding, don't hit me...Or I'll call Chuck Norris, and you wouldn't want that would you?

You know at the fresher's fair in the sports department, I was checking out the different clubs available and stuff, and a tiny girl from the ju-jitsu club, not taller than like 5"4 stood in my way and said "Hey, what would you do if I punched you in the face right now?"

Dude I was PETRIFIED. What the hell can you do if a TINY - GIRL, hits you?!
PLUS she knows JU JITSU... *sigh* strange times
I really liked it when I visited! The area wasn't nice, but once I went inside the campus it was totally different.

Nah, wait till your second semester where you'll have Bob Janes (teaches basic biochemistry/biomolecules of life) now he's awesome! :awesome:

Ooh, I'm taking that module too. He better be good if he's too be better than 'Self Enlightenment is More Important than Biology' Curran.

That and it seems to be the de facto back up place to failed LSE/KCL/UCL students from the people I know

Haha, I fall into that stereotype then.. Queen Mary is my insurance, UCL is my first choice! oh dear  I have a very strong feeling my UCL app will be unsuccessful though.

New? The one I'm on about has been there ages xD
Is it really that bad? QMUL is currently where I'm leaning towards (after dropping out of Aberdeen.. which was.. errm.. yeah..) and I get the impression it's not somewhere everyone smiles and talks to each other? (I know this is stupid, but living in Worcester, it's one those things you come to enjoy.)

Why did you drop out? :frown:

It was a little hasty decision, but, (again I know I'm being silly..) but I was getting like 'dead' vibes? Aberdeen (the Uni too) felt very closed (the locals aren't the politest of individuals to 'southerners' - despite living in the Midlands.) I know you shouldn't base Uni decisions purely on social aspects, but Aberdeen looked a little unfinished? Like someone starting working on it, then decided they couldn't be bothered and made a half-hashed attempt at finishing (you only need to look at the buildings around Union Street.
