Re: Interview at Manchester UniversityOh thats good news(Original post by Artymess)
i got an interview for biology last year, and this year i'm at manchester doing my degree
can thoroughly recommend the life sciences faculty
my interview was basically someone talking to me about biology, going through my personal statement and generally asking me about my expectations, why i wanted to go there, etc. it was good, only lasted about 15mins and i got told i had an offer straight away
, what are the questions like? I'm scared that I'm going to get nailed or put on the spot with hardcore biology =(?

Re: Interview at Manchester University(Original post by emmaaa..)
i've got an interview on the 17th too, for microbiology, and same as you it's my 5th choice (im a vet applicant).
i'm a bit worried they'll just concentrate on the fact it's my back-up and question if i really want to be on the course. or do people think they'd just concentrate on the course in hand i.e. microbiology, without basing it entirely on the fact that nearly all of my ps is veterinary based?
have you had an email asking for you to write another personal statement on the course you're applying for?
so time-consuming :/ -
Re: Interview at Manchester Universityno i haven't. i'm quite confused as to why, as two other vetty people have been asked to write a new one for their 5th course at manchester(Original post by Lingo09)

Re: Interview at Manchester UniversityHi, you said they will probably offer your predicted grades but will they take your AS grades into consideration?(Original post by oddsox)
I got an email saying that too, and it doesn't update on ucas until then, it said that on mine too, but they still told everyone on the day.
They'll offer you your predicted grades, as long as they're within the bracket, I think it's AAB-BBB might be wrong though, look at the entry requirements on the website.
And I forgot to say, all the life sciences interviews are done together, so you may not be with cell biologists when you're shown round.
Because for AS i got ABBB and i am predicted AAB (because one of the Bs were close to an A) but i would more likely get ABB which is the requirement for the course so what kind of offer do you think i could get?
Im just abit worried that the higher predicted grade would be a disadvantage as might not get it.
thanks -

I think they'll still offer you your predicted grades, but if you think they're unreasonable, provided you've got a reason, they'll lower it, but to no less than ABB. Just tell the interviewer in the interview, I think they mention it in the morning talks anyway. -
Interview at Manchester for Chemical Engineering
Hey TSR,
I have an interview at manchester for chemical engineering on the 8th and I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on the types of questions they ask and any insight to what to expect. its my first ever uni interview so am quite nervous :P
Also, would it be a good idea to take my extended project to show them or will that come across as being desperate to prove myself
thanks in advance
-
Re: Interview at Manchester for Chemical EngineeringWould probably hold off on the project..slip it into the conversation or just talk about it if it comes up. Well all I can say is be yourself and try to answer honestly as I'm pretty sure the guy has heard pretty much everything there is to from other candidates.(Original post by Prudhvi)

Re: Interview at Manchester for Chemical Engineering
if you got an interview at Manc for chemeng, chances are you're probably already in. As long as you dont screw up big time you'll be fine. Standard questions are like "why dyu wanna do chemeng?", "why manchester?", "what are your strengths and weaknesses?". If you're unlucky like me -_-, they'll ask a few technical questions, but they're nothing too difficult, like "what could you use to identify the molecualr formula of a compound?", "how could you speed up a reaction?" and "What is activation energy?". Also, dont forget to prepare for the "so, do you have any questions for me?". It's more important a question than you'd think. It's a good opportunity to show that you are interested enough to have questions to ask them regarding their course or research or whatever. Dont ask anything they mention in their prospectuses and dont ask questions regarding contact time or stuff like that, coz that just shows that your education isnt your main priority. Try to engage the interviewer and talk you him less like an interviewee and more like just an ordinary person who's interested in the uni, the course and the lecturer. For example, at Brum i spent 5 mins of my interview talking, somehow, about the Chinese economy...i got an offer in 2 days

Re: Interview at Manchester for Chemical Engineering
Don't bother, Manchester interview is basically a friendly chat to get to know you, etc. I was asked about my hobbies, my life, and it was just like talking to an elder adult who you didn't know.
The guy didn't even wear a suit, or shirt or tie. I'm pretty sure they call each other by their first names too. Seriously, don't stress too much about it, just be yourself, and answer normally.
There's like a 90% chance you already have an offer (if you have the right grades in AS and predicted and likely to get AAA atleast in A2). Where else have you applied? -
Re: Interview at Manchester for Chemical Engineering
I agree with 'IneedMentalHelp'. My interview was pretty casual, I did have an interviewer who I could barely understand though :/ Still got the offer
The main admissions tutor did say that because you were there, the chances of you getting the offer are 9/10. Good luck!

Re: Interview at Manchester for Chemical EngineeringLol dude you were right :P, it was pretty informal and relaxed lol. didnt fell like an interview. I applied to Mancherster, UCL, Loughborough , birmingham and endinburgh. wbu?(Original post by IneedMentalHelp)

Manchester Uni Secondary PGCE interview
Hi everyone,
I have an interview next week for a Secondary English PGCE interview. If anyone would offer any advice or tips for the interview (specifically to the english interview or secondary pgce interviews in general) that would be great.
On the day I have to do:
1. Text-based teaching activity. You will prepare and carry out a short text-based teaching activity with other PGCE English interviewees. A text and an objective for this activity will be provided for you. Following 10 minutes’ preparation time, you will be asked to read the text aloud and to enable fellow applicants to explore an aspect of the text.
2. Interview. You will be asked about your reasons for wanting to be a secondary English teacher, and to comment on your recent school experience. You will also be asked about how you would teach a Shakespeare play of your choice and a language or literacy topic.
[Does anyone know what types of literacy topics these could be?]
3. Assessment of a piece of writing by a student. You will be asked to write an assessment of its main strengths and how you might enable the student to develop as a writer.
4. Numeracy and literacy tests.
[If anyone could tell me what these are like? I know that sounds stupid as i'm going for an English PGCE, but if you know what the exercises for are like, such as spelling, a piece of reading comprehension etc. that would be help me prepare for it. Similarly for maths, is there any mental arithmetic? etc.]
Any advise would be greatly appreciated; good luck to everyone else applying to Manchester =)! -

I have this interview on Friday and I'm so nervous! How did it go? Did you get on the course?!
I'm just wondering you have any tips for the text based teaching activity - I have prepared everything else, but this is the part of the interview that I'm most worried about
Any help would be appreciated!
