Taa very much Pollo Loco - will hopefully have a FAB time at AVS (iv heard good things about it!) Shame u wont be there with us :frown:

Hey Emily. 1stly, as the other guys have said, you absolutely CAN wait until uve heard from all your unis before making the 'final decisions'. This is exactly what most ppl do.
I had offers from RVC and Liverpool (am liverpool 1st year now) and got both my offers 1-2 weeks after the interview, which i reeeeeeeeaally didnt expect! For liverpool, i already had an offer by the time my friend was told she even had an interview! - so the whole process/time scale is pretty random and varies between ppl. If it takes a while for decisions to come through - DONT PANIC! Take Arwens case for example, 5 months of waiting and in the end she got an offer!

All the luck in the world for it! (my RVC interview was 11th November!...this year has gone SO fast!) Before you know it, ull b staring down a microscope thinking 'wtf am i looking at!!!?'

Also good luck to all other prospective vets reading this - u can do it! and o yea,...LIVERPOOL is the place to be!!!

You'll be FINE!!!!! My (only) interview at rvc was really nice! - they know ur a bit nervous!!

Here are some of the q's they asked me last year...

How are you finding your A2 subjects?
Which one do you like the most?
Would it be a shock living in London?
Why did you apply to RVC?
Have you done dissection at school, would you agree with dissecting a mouse for an alevel course?
What would be the animal you would most like to dissect?
Do you agree with animal testing?
What is the role of a farm vet?
As a farm vet, how would you tell a farmer that you are concerned about animal welfare issues on the farm?

Then various questions about inetrests e.g gold DofE and environmental thingys and anythingvaguely interesting in ur personal statement!!

erm...other people I know got asked about zoo's, fox hunting (apparently they try to make u contradict yourself!!) and also, look up anything that is in the news to do with vets, farming or animals etc, incase they ask anything about science/veterinary stuff in the news!!

Other than that, be confident!!!
Reply 45
Think Arwen's just about covered it there. Really, they'll ask about what you learned on your work experience to see if you paying attention and anything else vaguely interesting from your personal statement.

Keeping up to date with vet issues is a good thing, one we've had recently is kidney transplants in cats and the ethics of it. Other than that, have your opinion and keep to it but be willing to have a discussion and look at other viewpoints. The interview is all about dialogue with your interviewers, if you can draw them into a good converstion then that's a good way to start.

Other than that, be friendly and confident. Be yourself and really let them see how you are as a person, you'll charm the socks of them and enjoy it, you only do it once!

Good luck to any prospective vets with interviews coming up, i'm confident you'll all be wonderful.

Dan

P.S Anyone with a good solution for multiple football injuries (namely stud slashes on both knees and an arm) let me know as i'm feeling very abused after todays game. Maybe is hould grab one of our medics, but i don't fancy dying/getting painkillers just yet!

i got rvc interview on 17th, would like to know the questions all you vet students got. Also can i ask what do i wear, some people are saying wear a suit, but im not sure
Reply 47
Well, i wore a trousers and a jacket, not a suit but smart casual and a shirt but people turn up in every thing from suits to jeans and a t-shirt so whatever you're comfortable in. Can't help you with questions though, it was 2 years ago now and i've kinda forgotten specifics. See Arwen's post from earlier and my general pointers. If anyone else has anything to add they'll do so in good time. If you want mawi99102 you can use the member list in the thread to PM people who are at RVC to ask them, i'm sure they'll be happy to help you out.

Heres what I got asked, at least what I can remember it seems such a long time ago when really it isn't.
I just realised this time last year i'd never been to Glasgow before and now its my home

Royal Veterinary College
How are you finding your A2 subjects?
Why did you choose to do Geography along with sciences/maths?
Why London?
What are your views on people keeping exotic pets?
What do you think about vivisection?
Do you think you would prefer small animal/large animal practice?
You said you would like to perhaps specialise in orthopaedics, what orthopaedic surgery have you seen?
Would you consider working in the academic/research sector of VetMed?

Cambridge
Asked technical questions on each of your A2 subjects and then the Veterinary questions below.
Why do you want to be a vet?
What are your views on the 'Animal Hospital' type of programme?
Do you think there should be a Vet National Health Service?
What are your views on blood-sports?
What are your views on cloning?
What genetic diseases do you know of in dogs?
What public health issues are there as a Vet?
How would I investigate a given research problem?

Glasgow
Talk about an interesting case you have come across during your work experience
What are your views on the Hunting ban? Will it cover Northern Ireland?
How did you find your visit to an abattoir?
What skills do you have which you feel are suited to the veterinary profession?

Bristol
What stress do vets have to overcome?
What do you understand about emergency call outs being shared amongst practices?
Why does this normally only happen with small animal practices and not large animal?
Do you not think you would get bored as a small animal vet doing mainly spays/neutering?
oooh thank you everyone!! very helpful indeed
I've been doing some reading on defras website and just thinking a bit more about different questions and my opinions on things and had a look through my personal statement.. to try and work out what they might ask me! I know theres going to be loads of random questions that I wouldn't expect... but its going to be better if I'm a bit more prepared...
well I'm feeling more confident now... and I think thats the main thing... still extremely nervous... but more confident than I was!!

Thanks for all the help :biggrin::biggrin:

i can't say i remember anyone in the t-shirt/jeans combo. I went in one of those checked shirts that you always see farmers in, a tie and moleskin trousers. It may sound odd but i think i stood out from other people for the right reasons. it never failed me as every interview i had i received an offer...
Reply 53
Admittedly there weren't very many people in jeans etc, i only saw 3 or 4 at my 3 interviews, and they were at Bristol and RVC, no-one applying to Cambridge turned up more casual than how i went i think, there were lots of suits with public school ties knocking about.

Hi to all you vets

Im applying for vet med this year and have been given an interview date of the 10th of Nov at RVC! I havn't had any interview dates through from my other choiuces (Liverpool, Nottingham and Glasgow) but I was just wonderin....
Firstly how soon after interview will the university get back to you telling you wether you have been successful etc?
Secondly if I did get an offer from London would I have to decide wether to accept within a certain amount of time? Or could I wait until I had heard from the other Unis? (London isn't my first choice-liv is but I realise you can't be that picky!)

many thanks

emily

Liverpool haven't yet timetabled their interview dates. When i applied the first interviews started on the first wednesday in january and were every wednesday for eight weeks. Mine was on 7th Jan and i was told this on 20th December. they told me i wouldn't hear from them again until all interviews were over but i received my offer after about 5 weeks.

Glasgow sent me a letter on 29th December wanting to interview me on 27th January. i received my offer within a week of my interview.

i didn't apply to rvc but i'm told they always interview early, and they give more offers per applicant than any other because often they are people's second choice.

you are meant to wait until all offers/rejections have been finalised before you decide. UCAS send you a form which shows you your options. i think you put an F next to your first choice as a Firm decision and an R next to a Reserve. and if you're lucky enough to get more than two then i think you put an X next to the other/s. it might be some other letter i can't remember.

hope thats of some help. gt

Pollo Loco
I'd say only the large intestines of a fresh horse dissection smell worse than that. That's pretty manky though, sounds like you had a fun day. I've got brain dissection on Wednesday which promises to be a barrel of laughs.

Dan

another pretty manky thing was when we cut the larynx and tongue out of our dog. that had a fair odour to it. and some of his last breakfast also made its way onto the table. Bonio i think it was...

one thing you learn early on is not to lean on your dog's abdomen as this has unwanted side effects.

When I had my interview - everyone else there was wearing a white shirt and black trousers - everyone looked the same!! I'd be tempted to wear something more original, so they can remember you (for good reasons hopefully) I'd say smart, but not too posh, as u'll look like yur trying too hard- show them that u want to be a proper vet - and not afraid to get ur hands dirty!!

oh ...and GOOD LUCK!!!!
