    I never got that email...

I have an offer for the Paralympics, but my application is still under review for the Olympics.

Nice to know they are consistent with sending out emails...

    Neither.

You've neither got the job nor been turned down from it.

This is the email that was sent out:

hank you for your ongoing patience as we enter the final stages of our Games Maker recruitment process. We want to let you know that you are still in the process and explain how the next stage will work.

We're really grateful to you for sticking with us as we've processed nearly 250,000 application forms, invited over 100,000 people to interviews and assigned applicants to over 65,000 roles.

As you can imagine, the process involved in filling this number of roles is extremely complex. We have built into our planning the fact that additional roles will be needed, and that many people who receive an offer will not be able to accept it, or will withdraw as the process goes on. This is standard practice in recruitment operations of this size.

What this means for you is that you are one of around 20,000 applicants who we know have the skill, determination and passion to be a Games Maker – and we hope to offer you a role in our final round of offers. However we cannot make this offer until a space becomes available due to more roles being required or another applicant rejecting their offer. If you do get an offer, you will receive all the necessary training and uniform in time for your shifts.

We know that this will mean a few more weeks of uncertainty for you as you wait for your offer. We are very hopeful that by the end of June we will have been able to offer you a role, and if not we will be in touch by then to let you know about further options to be involved in London 2012.

    Many thanks,

    The London 2012 Volunteer team

You are awaiting someone dropping out , so that you can take their place, they wrapped it up very nicely, and I am sure a few will get an offer, (transport is possible for a few, as the shifts really are not very friendly) but almost all will not be required .

Still remaining positive though, we'll see what happens.

Got a role as with Transport, as T3 Call Centre Operator No further details at all as yet, which isn't great, looking forward to it nonetheless

Can now see my shifts. Ouch. All at least 8hrs, some 10, usually starting at 8am, but some 6's.

15 days over 3 weeks despite saying only available for 10 days maximum, though

Read this thread, not hard to understand.

Yes it's a logistical nightmare to coordinate and arrange something of this scale. But it's not as if they didn't know that before they started.

Knowing the problem does not make it any easier, The task is the largest attempted since WW11. , No one who is leading the work, has done the job before, and yes there has been a few problems, but many more have been successfully overcome. Of Course if you would like to choose any one area that you could think , with hindsight, how you would have done it better, I am sure many would like to hear about it.

Frankly, there are no excuses. "Knowing the problem doesn't make it easier"? Er, yes it does. If you know what's wrong then you know what the right thing is supposed to be and you know what needs to happen to get it from wrong to right. In the RAF I was taught to problem solve. To identify problems and have preset solutions and methods for fixing them ready, to have contingencies for every possible scenario. If an arising problem completely flummoxes people to the point they're rendered clueless and without answers, then they shouldn't be employed.

If they knew they were going to have issues, then they bring in people from Sydney - who's volunteers were widely regarded as some of the best the Olympics have ever had - and use their experience to help them deliver a competent organisation. I know they were consulted early on, so either the right questions weren't asked, the lessons weren't learned or LOCOG were too proud to admit they
    needed more help.

I will sing the praises of the Olympics to anyone, never once have I thought it something we shouldn't do or a waste of money. But I am less and less inclined to give up my time to an organisation that doesn't seem to give two hoots about me.

I ask what you would have done differently / better for a reason, our group has a contact with a highly placed official in the preparations of the games and are compiling a number of suggestions which we are going to give him to pass on, we only know about the volunteer side, so all our 'points' are going to be relevant to the organization and running of the volunteer scheme. so as I said "with hindsight, how you would have done it better,"

Ok, my messages to anyone high up:
    - sod the spin. If you don't know an answer/set date, don't fluff it, say that you don't know,
    - If you do set a date, meet it. If it becomes clear you're not going to meet it, tell people that in exactly those words, don't mess them about,
    - be clear about what you want and how you want it. You've got enough applicants to be sure that someone meets the requirements, the less bland and 'one size fits all' you make it, the better for everyone,
    - don't treat people like morons/uneducated/slaves.

Thank you, I agree 100%, we might just put it in a slightly more diplomatic way :-)

No. That's the problem. Things have been done using politico-speak, being too diplomatic, leaving too much wiggle room. Things need to be put bluntly so that they're better understood.
Hence my first point: "sod the spin". Just get on with it and tell it as it is. There's nothing wrong with calling a spade a spade when it's done politely and respectfully. Softening it up only serves to dilute the message. If they truly want to learn from it, then the last thing they should do is dilute it.

Re: Games Maker 2012 Olympic Volunteers
    Just got my shifts through...

    I live in OXFORD

one day I am working from 1pm-7:45pm at Brands Hatch in KENT
the NEXT day it says I am working from 4:30am at the mall in CENTRAL LONDON until 2:30pm

This is impossible?!? I don't own a car so I am relying on public transport and an my application form it has this detail so they knew this. I worked out that to be able to do both shifts I would only get between 2-3 hours sleep that night, even if i did use a car... This is ridiculous.

I really wanted to volunteer, but unless they will let me change my shifts I will have to drop out of at least one of the venues. =/ I would stay with family/friends... but i don't have any family or friends that live in kent.

Some were getting rejected a few months age, then after April 30th , everyone without a role was put on the 'waiting' List, which personally could have been worded more clearly.
