Thursday? Are you sure? Or have I read that out of context? Apologies if I have but my Beliefs in Society paper is this Friday at 1pm.

As for what will come up, I am leaning towards Gender and Ethnicity possibly appearing in the 18 mark section.
    That's right, I'm sorry.
One of my friends in my class corrected me about the day on facebook. It's Friday afternoon, I got confused with my law exam which is on the Thursday after.

Hey Guys, I need your help.

I've been revising for Fridays exam, but theres a few topics which I'm really confused about, and knowing my luck it will come up..

Could anyone explain the below..it's all pretty much in the 'is religion a force for change or a conservative force' section..

    - The liberation theology (something to do with Latin America)
    - Weber's overall work.( he talks about how Calvinism and the protestant church. Majority confused on what he's talking about, and why its so important).

If anyone could help I'll be so grateful!

    Good Luck for Friday!

I need at least 72/80 to carry on with "the A* dream" :P
But this topic is easily one of the most boring and hardest to revise for......I had a brief look at crime and deviance the other day and it seems really interesting, can't wait for that

Liberation theology: For change to occur for the working class (WC), it requires the church to make it happen.

Societies where religion remains dominant, social change only occur if churches change. This change could occur if WC take discontent on church and their anguish would be voiced by the clergy who would become WC 'intellectuals' and make social change happen

This is largely based on latin American priests in the 60’s criticised bourgeoisie, preaching liberation theology for change. Other examples from Christianity show it's a Christians duty to be involved in economic and political liberation

Weber: He was looking for the roots of capitalism and believed they existed in Protestantism

In particular one sect called Calvinists. They had ideals of minimality, where no sex, plain clothes and saving money were virtues and rules. Because of this lifestyle they spent much time working and therefore had quite a bit of money. As they were unable to spend it on lifestyle items they reinvested in their businesses and therefore planted the seeds of capitalism where an emphasis on business for profit was created. This is important as it shows religion can be a force for change and it attempts to find the roots of capitalism.

The liberation theology is when churches in Latin America helped the poor by like giving them food and money and stuff, and taking on the oppressive regime of the government at that time. But then they stopped in 1980's because the Pope told them to focus on pastoral activities. Use this as an example of how religion CAN be used for social change. Would've been more successful if it had extended it's zone though, they only helped like close neighborhoods.

Calvinism (Weber's study) is about how people started to panic because of divine transcendence and predestination (God knows where you'll end up and theres nothing you can do about it). So they started to live as plainly as possible, practicing asceticism and pumping any money that they got right back into the business. This caused businesses to flourish and this is how modern day capitalism developed. He stressed that they had to have 2 types of ideas for it to work though; this-worldly and other-worldly. Using money to pump into the business (this-worldly) and having the idea to not spend money on themselves (other-worldly) they were able to succeed.

Bit long-winded but if you can cut it down and still keep all the essentials in the exam, you're laughing

Could at least give +rep :P
No problem though, and yeah I really want/need an A* in this subject so, I'm in the same boat as you. Revision websites are kind of rare, but have a look at Noodlzzz's post on like page 2, he uploaded condensed notes for the entire topic
