That is a very good question! although I have studied the era of national socialism, German Reich and World War II intensively, I don't get an answer.

"WE, THE JEWISH PEOPLE, CONTROL AMERICA. AND THE AMERICANS KNOW IT."
-- Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon

"World War II was engineered by “Zionists”. Anna-Marie Crampton, UKIP candidate

“The Jews rule this world by proxy, they get others to fight and die for them… They have now gained control of the most powerful countries This tiny community have become a world power.” former Malaysian Prime Minister, Dr. Mahathir Mohamed

“...Centuries will pass, but from the rubble of our city, our hatred of those who are to blame, international Jewry and its lackeys...I have made it clear that if they treat the nations of Europe as tools that may be bought and sold by these international swindlers for money and material support, then that race, the Jewish race, which is truly responsible for this murderous struggle, shall bear the consquences...Above all, I oblige the national leadership and its followers to observe the racial laws scrupulously and subject the poisoner of all nations international Jewry to merciless resistance.” —Hitler’s will, written only a few hours before his suicide
April 29, 1945

"There is only one power which really counts. The power of political pressure. We Jews are the most powerful people on earth, because we have this power, and we know how to apply it.” Jewish leader Ze’ev Jabotinsky (founder of the group Zevai Leumi) (Jewish Daily Bulletin, July 27, 1935)

“The Bible talks about two kinds of Jews. One is called the Synagogue of Satan. They’re the ones putting out the pornographic literature. They’re the ones putting out those obscene films.” Reverend Billy Graham, White House Tapes (conversation with President Richard M. Nixon, February 21, 1973)

The Jewish ''stranglehold has got to be broken or the country's going down the drain,'' President Nixon, 1972

There is no need to exaggerate the part played in the creation of Bolshevism and in the actual bringing about of the Russian Revolution, by these international and for the most part atheistical Jews. It is certainly a very great one; it probably outweighs all others. With the notable exception of Lenin, the majority of the leading figures are Jews. Moreover, the principal inspiration and driving power comes from the Jewish leaders. Thus Tchitcherin, a pure Russian, is eclipsed by his nominal subordinate Litvinoff, and the influence of Russians like Bukharin or Lunacharski cannot be compared with the power of Trotsky, or of Zinovieff, the Dictator of the Red Citadel (Petrograd), or of Krassin or Radek -- all Jews. - Winston Churchill 1920

Rupert Murdock "Jewish controlled press"

Benjamin Disraeli, Prime Minister of England, and Leader of the Conservative Party said on a well-known occasion: "The Lord deals with the nations as the nations deal with the Jews."

The Nazis were socialists in the economic sense.

They believed in state ownership of the means of production, punitive taxation on the wealthy and significant state intervention in the economy. The reason the modern of socialists of today discard them is because of a refusal to distinguish between economic and social policy. His social policy of course being undeniably authoritarian.

In the same way that a capitalist is still a capitalist whether he supports the death penalty or liberalisation of drug policy, socialism is a purely economic construct regardless of your social views.
I have looked the derivation up. Socialism is derivated from the Latin word socialis what means companionable. Based on this meaning, its not a contradiction to be companionable and at enmity at the same time. In terms of National Socialism, National Socialists are comrades among themselves, but there were a certain ethnicity of people - namely Jews - which they hate nevertheless. National Socialism was quasi an alliance against Jews. And this Alliance made these National Socialists to comrades. And as far as I know there were people in Wehrmacht in which they describe themselves as comrades to demonstrate their unity.

That is my personal explanation at least why National Socialism contains the word 'Socialism'.

'Socialism' doesn't just mean reading the Guardian, being right-on, and hating Margaret Thatcher. Socialism is at core based around economic principals which unfortunately allow the government to have a large amount of power. The Nazi's were socialist in every way. But they were were also fascist. Fascism is in no way at odds with socialism. In fact fascism couldn't work in a society which wasn't either socialist or communist.
Now I know that Adolf Hitler was a bad guy but he did know a thing or two about "branding" of political parties and about PR or spin doctoring. By that standard "National Socialism" is a very clever name. It certainly appealed to the masses. It created a sense of justice for the dispossessed in socialism. And it unified a very politically divided country by declaring itself national. Unity was a very important part of the Nazi message.

How on earth were the Nazis 'socialists' or did that mean something different back then to what it does now? Didn't they hate the Communists, and isn't communism basically a stronger form of socialism?

Hitler said he regretted that name afterwards IIRC.

Economically though, Nazi Germany was very left wing with public works programmes, a large public service and large state intervention in the economy.

Perhaps this is over simplistic but doesn't national socialism mean socialism but just taking care of ones own nation and people as opposed to say socialism with mass immigration, foreign aid and supporting other people.

Now that New Labour has to deal with the fact that its voter base does not like mass immigration it will have to at least pretend to have national socialist policies.
I'm not well versed in this period of history, but aI was taight at GCSE that it was to have their intentions remain ambiguous while appealing to a large section of people/

"Nationalist socialist" doesn't seem to have a particular inherent meaning, nationalism sounded partriotic and right wing where as socialism is inherently left wing. I think it was to have a broad appeal to those across class spectrums, especially since the poor would have wanted to vote for a radical party that would help the workers, and people would want to regain national pride after the humiliation of the treaty of Versailles.

Their economic policies were centrist-socialist

They hated communism more because of the talk of men being equal, opposing hierarchy and the fact that Karl Marx had Jewish ancestry.
