deffering a place while having already started uni?

I have heard of people doing this due to exceptional circumstances. Is it possible to deffer your place at uni till next year even if u have already started it?
I guess it depends on the university. A friend of mine has suspended his course for a year, but I would imagine he probably had to make a decent case to be allowed to do so.

Someone on my course started the year but within a few weeks had a bad fall and now has to have various operations on their leg. They've been given deferred entry for year 1 next year. But then sudden illness does count as exceptional circumstances.
