Self employment thread

I thought it would be good if there was a thread on this.

Does anybody running their own business or thinking about it? I am planning to run a web and multimedia company. I want to produce high quality PHP/XHTML/CSS driven sites and offer multimedia authoring such as DVD menus and promotional CD-ROMs etc.

It is pretty much what I did my degree in.

I am thinking of going down the sole trader route to test the market and then become limited if it looks like there is a chance of good sucess.

Yeah I'm pretty much the same as you except it's graphics I want to specialise in. I'm still at school but researching it thoroughly. Instead of getting a part time job in a shop or something, I'd much rather be my own boss, set my own deadlines. I need to do a lot more research before I jump into the deep end though.
I've started a film production company based in London and LA.
in a few years i im gonna quit where i am and work for myself. hopefully.

Thats pretty hard to get into, have you had much sucess? One of the side lines I am thinking of offering is DVD menu production and multimedia authoring.

Morbid in your line of work its pretty easy to go self employed, you just need to have insurance and inform inland revenue. You need money for advertising though.

You could probably easy earn £30-£40k though in that line of self employment. Make sure you give it a go and don't put it off, ok fair enough work for a few more years but in 30 years time don't be doing the same job and regretting it.

I'm not doing badly at all actually. We have good sources of alternative venture capital an we are obviously legal. Also I wouldn't get in this line of work for a mere 30 or 40k a year... for that I'd get a boring 9-5 or something..

Lol I would be happy with £15k for my first year wage, however I am not doing it for the money, I am doing it for social and political reasons. I want to offer employment in good jobs for disadvantaged members of society.

To put blunty I would be a good boss but not a great managing director form a purely business point of view. However I think my ethics will give the business greater long term survival.
