The Student Room Group

Hate my English Grammar module. Need help on how to revise.

Hello there,

I am in my first year of Linguistics. Our prescribed textbook is 'The Students Guide to English Grammar' by Huddleston and Pullman.

I absolutely don't understand what goes on in my lectures and we have done so much :frown:

I have my end of term test next week and think I'm going to totally screw this up.

Any advice on how to revise? Mind maps? Useful websites? Some other books that you may have found useful. HUddleston and Pullman is ****.

Thanks,

/Sofia x

Hey , where are you studying Linguistics ?? I am a linguistics fresher at UCL, not sure if I will be any help to you but I could have a go - what sort of things have you been doing so far?

We have "Thinking Syntactically " by Haegeman as our prescribed reading, however I wouldn't really recommend that either to be honest. Fromkin et al - "An Introduction to Language" is an all round good book I think for linguistics, and has a fairly strong chapter on syntax.

Other than that I would say a couple of good websites would be
http://norvin.dlp.mit.edu/~norvin/24.902/home.html - which is MIT's intro to syntax and although pretty advanced helped me out of a few tight spots.

Also if you have the time , going through
https://christal.elte.hu/curriculum2/Anglisztika/90Sz%E9cs%E9nyi/contents.htm
is pretty useful.

If you have any specific questions I will do my best , or can ask some other people who might know. Don't give up !!!
