Hey, just wondering if anyone has gone through the process of applying to prague. I'm thinking of considering it as i have four UK medical rejections :frown: I've heard some negative things about studying abroad, but only briefly, are there any real down points on studying in prague?
(sorry if some of these questions are answered, havent read the entire thread :/)

The fact that if you can't speak fluent Czech, you'll be kicked off the course before the clinical years. Quite a significant downside!

Do you reckon you can learn a language fluently within 2-3 years, alongside full-time medical studies?

Haha, yeh. :p: That's my point. My girlfriend has been studying french/german for like 3, 4, 5 years in all and she's nowhere near fluent (by her own admission!), and she studies it full time. I doubt anybody could learn a language to a level which you could banter with patients alongside a full time medical degree. I think you're best to have a gap year and then reapply next year!

Whilst on placement I met someone who was an FY1/2 who had studied in Prague. He was fluent, and he wasn't of Czech descent. He may just be really good at languages though :dontknow:

But OP I wouldn't recommend it tbh.

You're talking about your future life and you can't even be bothered to spend half an hour reading a thread? Why the hell would you expect anyone to help you if you can't be bothered yourself?

I think it's a terrible idea.

1.) It's in Prague, so any difficulties at home it will be miles away.

2.) It's more expensive

3.) You will be dogged throughout your career by the fact you had to go to Prague and you just look like a failure regards getting into medical school

4.) There is always a risk that rules regarding foreign trained docs could be tightened

5.) The language issue

6.) The actual quality of teaching is questionable seeing as it is not regulated by the gmc

Not necessary to make ridiculous comments...you have no idea the amount of research that has already taken place - just looking for alternative opinions. Since threads don't always provide vital information (just as your comment has proven), its probably best to spend more time researching elsewhere. Relax would you!

Research elsewhere then. Don't expect the people whose posts you are dismissing to "help me decide what to do!" if you hold that opinion though.

Hey, I'm a 1st year med student at Charles uni and am from the UK. Czech's quite easy to pick up and I'm definetely not one of those languages people. They only kick you out for not knowing Czech at the end of year 2 before the clinical years begin at year 3 and you get three attempts at that Czech test.

The only bad points is that it's quite expensive (can't quite remember off the top of my head) but my dad knows doctors in london hospitals and they're impressed at the level of knowledge that fy1s from Prague have and i myself know several people who are going into specialist and even consultant training who have graduated from Prague so dont worry about your uni affecting your status if you want to work back in the UK again.

If you have anymore questions then fire away, but bear in mind i'm only a first year student, I don't have the answers to everything, yet...

But if you're doing your A2s and you think you can get REALLY good grades to be able to go on a gap year and reapply then do that because all 7 of my mates that were on a gap year and wanted to do medicine/dentistry have all got places now.

Best of luck to you in the future!!!

Best of luck for the future!!!

Oh and even if you pass the czech test and still are hazy with your czech during the clinical years, they always have the professors nearby who are willing to translate for you. They'll just be pissed off with you that's all
Hey voodoo..dude i want to study dentistry in prague..i have some information about this course in prague..but i am very confused as to go for prague or not..please if you can give me any information about the dentistry course nd d job prospects back in uk?..and how much will it cost me overall in one year including house nd food nd fees ..thx man

@Arya, I'll tell u details tomorrow.

@Blob, teaching is very thorough, u get weekly tests on anatomy and histology every 2 weeks, sometimes you'll get anatomy and histology tests in the same week, add to that you'll get tests on czech and latin, but they're infrequent though, like one test every three weeks. They teach you all the theory first and then you apply it in clinical years. I don't think it would bias me because six years is a long time and also if you show you're confident and you know medicine inside out then there should be no reason why they shouldn't hire you. I'm not worried about it because I know people who know doctors that are getting specialist training right now who graduated from Prague, and they're all over the place from London to Birmingham; from Southend to Shenfield!

@arya, the degree is recognised in the EU (obviously) and the UK. To go work in USA, you need to do a test. I'm sure job prospects are good. I know lots of ppl that graduated from prague that now work in the UK, but im only 1st year so I don't know in-depth detail about it. It costs 13000 euros a year and uni accomodation is cheap but really really crap so just rent an appartment or something like that. I pay 10000CZK (czech koruna) every month for my flat and it's 2 bedroom one bathroom. Conversion rate is £1= 28CZK.
