Just go to Imperial. If you reapply and dont get in next year either, are you going to reapply again? You cant spend all your life reapplying.

Also, I did every past PAT paper and went through them with my physics teacher. But when it came to the actual exam, I dont think that it actually helped. I dont know about you but personally, a whole year of preparing for the paper wouldnt help me.

The fees are rising in 2012 so you will be paying triple for the same course as you will in 2011.

Are you kidding me?! tripple?!

Well for Home students it is just over 3K per year now for 2011 entry. In 2012, the fees cap will be raised to 9K. I know for a fact (talked to the principal at St Anne's in Oxford) that Oxford will be charging 9k per year. So yes, triple. It will probably also rise for International students, although I don't know how much it will be.

Oxford University, and no **** the feeling sucks:frown:. It came as a hard slap when I opened my email this morning, with my heart thumping on my chest, and skipped a beat as the words "sorry" "unsuccessful" and "disappointment" flashed through my mind as I precariously, tentatively scanned through the document. I 'm currently at my lowest point, can't help but reflecting constantly on things that had gone wrong in my application.

But, I made this thread neither for the main purpose of ventilating my sorrows nor to sink in my pool of despair. I'm writing to seek the opinions of TSRers out there who have faced the painful situation that I'm in now, (I know how disappointing it must have been for you:erm:), I am sorry to bring up the dreadful experience again! Here goes my situation:

I'm thinking of reappling next year, but to do so I have to study for the entrance test one more time, practicing the problems over and again and I tell you, I don't like the feeling of solely studying for the exam and nothing else. I'd rather spend my time exploring other areas of physics and maths, just imagine the excitement!

I'll most likely be getting an offer from Imperial college for physics and theoretical physics, so should i just settle for Imperial or try again for Oxford?

Probable reasons why I might prefer Oxford over Imperial:
1)Brand-name
2)Cheaper

But Imperial seems to be practicing more at the edge of physics, offering programmes such as 'MSci Physics with Theoretical Physics' with the fourth year including a wide range of more advanced theoretical and mathematical options, some of which are shared with the highly specialised and renowned MSc in Quantum Fields and Fundamental Forces. Imperial seems to offer a more exciting experience than Oxford can!:awesome:

My parents will most likely be sponsoring my education (costing over 200k pounds!:ahhhhh:) and Oxford fees are cheaper than imperial, and the cost of living in london is insane!:headhurts:

Some personal information regarding myself - I'm currently under conscription for military service :lockstock: till the year after (I applied for university under deferred entry) so I don't have much time to myself and have to be focused at all times in my duty.

Sorry for the wall of text, thanks for taking the time to hear me out!:h:

Using such detailed grammar my dear boy, you would be a perfect candidate for imperial child!. Never mind Oxford as you could get a chance to do your masters there in later years if you wish to. There there, life isn't so harsh brave one. Dont take a gamble of applying next year, how are you so sure you wouldn't recreate another descriptive thread of your rejection?.

Oooopps, should have done further maths.

The A level system in my country abolished 'Further Mathematics' and classified subjects according to H1, H2 and H3 level. A H1 subject is of the same difficulty but half the content of a H2 subject. A H3 subject is a subject with content that is of undergraduate level.

If you wrote your application in the same overly dramatic poncy style as you have this post. I'd have told you to **** off too.

Have a good day.
This. So overblown! Imperial is amazing. I'd understand your 'pain' if you'd been rejected by Oxford and your only other option was London Southbank or something (no offence to Southbank students) but to give up an Imperial place, put in an application for Oxford when there's no guarantee you'll be accepted and face those fees to chase a pipe dream is quite possibly the silliest thing I've heard of. I understand how **** you must be feeling, don't get me wrong, but Imperial's 'brand name' is just as good as Oxford's... I might even go as far to say that Imperial is better for the sciences. It's your choice. If you can't stand the thought of going to imperial, then withdraw and reapply to Oxford. You might really regret it though.

You do realize that Imperial is a crazy place to be able to say you attended. They have a higher average graduate salary than both Oxford and Cambridge!

At the end of the day, going to Imperial or UCL is an incredible opportunity and would set you up nicely for anything. I cant stand it when people have this "if I dont get into Oxbridge Im not going anywhere" attitude. If you didnt get into Oxford this time, you probably wont get in again...just move on and be happy that you are still going to attend one of the finest universities in the entire world.
This!

I'm sorry but man up, you got a rejection it is by no means the end of the world so get a little perspective. Something you seem to lack especially as you seem to consider imperial to be a second rate uni when in terms of science and engineering it rivals oxbridge infact for science and engineering I'd say in many ways it's a better university to go to.

If you actually compare total school fees (2011/2012):

Oxford: £20,550 (Bloody college fee!!)
Imperial: £22,975

If you actually compare tuition fees (2011/2012):

Oxford: £14550
Imperial: £22,975

Difference = £8425/yr

Total Savings in 4 yrs = £33700 (Well over a year of tuition fees)

Yes but fees are going up, and its unclear by how much for international students, so it could well be a lot cheaper to go to imperial than wait a year and reapply, because the fees could rise by huge amounts.

Also, did you say you are expecting an offer from imperial?
Meaning you haven't actually got one yet?
Why don't you actually wait for your offers, that you may or may not get, and then make an informed decision.

Imperial would be incredible.
Imperial is a good University so don't feel you're missing out if you go there. However, since you were applying for deferred entry, you wouldn't lose much by applying again as you'd be entering University at the same time as you would have done anyway. Ignore the issue of tuition fee increases... deferring entry to 2012 would have meant you'd have been paying the higher fees anyway so the cost would be the same as if you had received an offer this year. Plus as an international student the difference won't be so marked for you. It'll probably increase, but not by 3 times
My God I hate people like you. In the long run it's not gonna make a massive difference to your life.

Seriously could be more sensitive.

You try going there for 4 days, meeting like minded people, living the Oxford dream and debating about the subject you love with the leaders of that subject. Then you get rejected, and tell me that within those 24 hours+ (the guy only just got rejected) you wouldn't feel like Oxford was the be all end all.

You should consider the fact that the majority of people do not get anywhere near going to Oxford! You may find it a major tragedy at the moment, but it's not the end of the world.
I wouldn't feel like a failure for being rejected from one of the TOP uni's, it's getting rejected from one of the worst that would be a ball ache! Try to think of the bigger picture.

i would love to see your face if you dont get imperial.

He's clearly disappointed, talk about trying to hit him when he's down. Low blow considering maybe just maybe an Oxford education means a lot to him as it does to numerous others. Also you only really get one shot at further education when you're this age, some would argue that the choices you make toward your education have great significance.

I've handled much bigger disappointment in my life than a university rejecting me.

I disagree entirely. The difference between Oxford and Oxford Brookes would obviously be significant. The difference between Oxford and Imperial is much less so.

If you're going to pin all your hopes on the best in life then you're always going to be disappointed. It's nothing but idiotic to get so worked up about a university, let alone one of the most notoriously difficult universities to get into. You need to be realistic.

The bit that made me reply more aggressively than I might have done is the "I 'm currently at my lowest point". If being rejected from Oxford is the lowest point in your life, I have no sympathy. That's pathetic.

:congrats:

bahahaha
Actually the stronger reason I chose Oxford over imperial was the cheaper fees, heck if imperial was cheaper I would have no problem at all going to imperial.
