Special
It's like the "M" in M Theory, noone is really sure :p:
Well there are some ideas about what the M in M-theory stands for...

"Additional amusement has come for many in guessing what the deliberately ambiguous letter "M" might stand for. Possibilities include Matrix theory, Muffin theory, Mystery theory, Magic theory, Maker theory, Murky theory, Membrane theory, Monstrous theory, and Mother theory. Sheldon Glashow believes that "M" is an upside-down "W" for Witten. Some scholars have expanded on Glashow's belief and claim that the "W" stands for ****** Theory. Regardless of what the M might possibly mean, M-theory has become one of the most interesting and active areas of research in theoretical physics today."

What does 'S' in STEP actually stand for?
(I mean the grade rather than the letter in the word...!)

'S' is the highest grade one can achieve in STEP.

Formerly, one had to pass 'scholarship' papers to gain an offer to Cambridge in all subjects.

STEP is an additional hurdle that Mathematicians have to pass whereas other subjects (with a couple of exceptions) only require A levels.

The S stands for 'scholarship' level - a throwback to the scholarship papers, formerly taken in the third year of 6th form.
