People who know nothing about music but act like they do/'like everything'
Dont you just hate how some people stereotype music? or those people who bought the latest chart cd and think they are the overseer of the genre?... examples of what they say regarding genres...
Metal - list faggy screamo bands for angry teenagers with a like/dislike comment or hardcore brutal 'CRADLE OF FILTH WUURGHH DEVIL HORNS' or just call it 'horrible banging for goths who may or may not slit their wrists and are angry cos there parents told them too tidy their room and they didn't want to'
r&b - name a black singer whose not street enough to be called 'urban'
hip hop - name a **** rapper you heard on kiss after 9pm selling a hardcore ghetto life style a man wearing gold chains and driving expensive cars surrounded by women rapping about a hard life shooting drug dealers in the streets is DEFIANTLY living or take it one step further and name someone whose not as **** as 50 cent, someone who is abit 'deeper' and 'real' like Kayne West or Jay Z who is still **** or just call it all 'Crap and say anyone can do it because its just like speaking'
Soul - well thats r&b aint it?
all Rock - a band with guitars
Indie - rock but for nerds like or dislike, name the Kings of Leon or a band no one has ever heard of and your in!
Trip hop/ambient - what what? Like whale music? no thanks i dont do yoga
Dubstep - OMG THIS IS LIKE HITLERS NAN GETTING FINGERED COVERED IN MY CAT IN A BLENDER THEN **** OUT THROUGH AN ELEPHANT or 'i dont like it because it 'insert first point' and it sounds the same'
all forms of trance/house/breakbeat/electro/minimal/breakcorestep etc - 'i dont like techno'
dnb - 'its alright but some of its a bit to chavvy, i like liquid though like Netsky and er... Netsky' or 'Omg chase and status are the best drun m base eva and nero OMG!!!! UKFUKFUKOF'
pop - 'oh well i love pop omg its like so good omgomgomgomg i love 'insert generic bimbo/average singer' because i love them' or 'pops what my mum likes i like 'insert genre and supporting statement above'
Agree or disagree?

Re: People who know nothing about music but act like they do/'like everything'
Here's my tips for dealing with such people:
When they say they like 'everything' I always ask "even metal?" and when they do what you say I will surely play them something which I hope will scare them ****less and they probably won't like.
Get them to talk about folk, chances are they'll mention mumford and sons (who aren't bad, but aren't exactly traditional folk)
Classical's a good one to talk about too, it certainly helps if you actually know quite a lot about classical music (which I don't, but I guess I know slightly more than your average joe)
Ask them about prog rock too.
Other genres which you might want to talk about: blues, bluegrass, jazz, country and western, black metal (including the subgenres of national socialis, suicidal/depressive, true norwegian and atmospheric), folk metal, death metal (melodic and brutal), melodeath (bonus points for distinguishing between 'melodeath' and 'melodic death metal'), drone metal, doom metal, pornogrind, sludge, avant garde metal, progressive metal and jazz metal. I can't think of any more obscure genres for now. -
Re: People who know nothing about music but act like they do/'like everything'
I listen to anything from baroque classical to modal jazz to ambient techno to delta blues... however, metal is the only genre that I simply don't like because of my tastes; however, that's not to say I don't appreciate some of the talent that goes into it. Unfortunately, 90% of it is rubbish; it's full of platitudes most of the time and is generally musically incompetent. The small minority do realease some listenable albums.
Some of what you say is true... most people talk about rock without knowing anything about theory, musicality, arrangement etc.
Also, what's annoying is when people throw around genre names without actually knowing what they mean. For example, "ohh yea, great techno," when you're quite clearly listening to house. At 120 bpm, 4 on the floor beats and vocals it's clearly house.
I could rant for another half hour, but I've already exposed just how snobbish I am when it comes to music.
Edit: I'd like to add, hip-hop is similar in the same respect as metal, in that 90% is rubbish... the good stuff though is excellent.
Look no further than J Dilla and Madvillain. I think what Gil-Scott Heron (the godfather of rap) says explains why I think the majority of hip-hop/rap is awful...
They need to study music. I played in several bands before I began my career as a poet. There’s a big difference between putting words over some music, and blending those same words into the music. There’s not a lot of humor. They use a lot of slang and colloquialisms, and you don’t really see inside the person. Instead, you just get a lot of posturing.
I LOVE GSH
Lastly, for all you single-minded rock fans: The dean of rock critics, Robert Christgau was the only critic to actually realise what a wonderful, poetic, real-life reflection hip-hop could be... However, he was talking about hip-hop's epoch; not sure whether his opinion would have changed today...
Edit 2: If you're going to neg, please feel free, and then give me a reason as to why you disagree. I'm interested to get some opinions and I do enjoy lively, yet rational debate...
Also, I feel the "neg" aspect of this site prohibits debate; it's too easy just to "neg," instead of retorting in a level-headed way.Last edited by theorb21; 31-12-2010 at 03:53. -
Re: People who know nothing about music but act like they do/'like everything'
My friend once got really angry and called Courtney Love a whore and said that Celebrity Skin only ever had that one good song, 'called Hole, or something'. That was quite amusing.
Threads like these make me a little bit irate at how irrational people can be. If you love music that much then make it into an actual ******* conversation and see if you can connect with someone, instead of trying to beat them in a game of 'name the obscure artists from the obscure genre'.
If someone tried to lecture me about music in any way then I'd be annoyed because they're essentially taking something that makes people relatable and aids bonding and is something that people are passionate about, and using it to try and belittle and alienate me. I couldn't give a damn whether you were insisting that anything out of the top 40 is rubbish, or whether the problem was that I'm just a brainwashed philistine that could never appreciate the fifty different metal genres you can reel off in your sleep, you're still acting like an idiot.Last edited by ormaybeitsjustnarcissism; 31-12-2010 at 03:10. -
Re: People who know nothing about music but act like they do/'like everything'
I can't stand smug, swarmy music types like the OP, Bill Bailey, phil Juptier and those ******* tosspots. I listen to whatever the **** I like the sound of - from the big break theme tune to blink 182 to eminem to jay-z to oasis to blur to darkness to ac/dc to lighthouse family to enya to David Essex to........anything else that takes my fancy.

Your user title is correct!!! -
Re: People who know nothing about music but act like they do/'like everything'
I kind of think that when you get too obsessed with music you make it boring for yourself. OP is so concerned with showing everyone that he knows all the technical details about all types of music and with categorising everything ad nauseum that I doubt he ever just stumbles across a track and gets to go 'wow, I love that - what is it?' If he does, he probably immediately starts analysing its structure in pointless detail so that he can put it in one of his little musical genre boxes.

Re: People who know nothing about music but act like they do/'like everything'I agree with this... it's something I'd do if I was 13 (and I did). Instead, I try to give people recommendations. If they take the time to listen (which is very rarely), they tend to end up liking whatever I recommened them, and by listening I mean listening to a whole album at least 3 times... It saddens when I play some Miles Davis and a friend says "I don't like it; the intro's boring." I mean Come on! Give it a chance!(Original post by ormaybeitsjustnarcissism)

I've come to accept that most people are, unfortunately, missing out on the joys of music by listening to a disposable stream of money-oriented banality (not saying that you do).
Also, I feel people miss out on music as whole if they don't have wide-ranging tastes.... the key component of music is, essentially, EMOTION and that's found in any good music... Some people don't give certain genres a chance, often because they sound "different." An example: one friend who didn't like some ambient music I was playing, because it didn't have a "beat." That's exactly the problem: Some of us have this preconceived idea of what music is... Cage's 4, 33 is obviously a good example of what I'm trying to say. It's not their fault per se, but the "pop" music's drive towards MONEY, which when put at the forefront, blurs the goals of creativity, originality, musicality, talent etc.Last edited by theorb21; 31-12-2010 at 03:45. -

That's morally wrong
To be honest I would have agreed with you but then you had to hate on Bill Bailey didn't you? -
Re: People who know nothing about music but act like they do/'like everything'
People say they like everything because if you don't some douches just try to educate you about everything or say what's better/why your favourite are crap blahhhh blahhhh
I also think it's actually a really personal question which sadly you're always judged on for the answer.
