Re: WJEC AS & A2 ChemistryMe too!(Original post by Zebra-Zahra)
Looks like I'll be resitting that...again
I'm really annoyed with myself because I worked hard for it and then I messed it up!!
I was getting over 90% on all the past papers and mock papers, then I got in the exam room and thought "Sh.it I don't know anything!" So fucjking annoyed with myself!

Re: WJEC AS & A2 ChemistryOh i didnt realise you were on this post also(Original post by x_Melissa_x)
Does anyone remember the answer to "What is the name of Compound B?" It was the question with something to with ethene at the beginning I think....
I can't remember what I put, but my friend put "dibromodimethylethane" and was wondering if it was right?
I think it was 2.3-dibromobutane but im not sure

Re: WJEC AS & A2 ChemistryHaha, I'm everywhere!(Original post by planetconwy1)

Thanks

Re: WJEC AS & A2 ChemistryWe were discussing this earlier in class and my teacher said that they were likely to accept:(Original post by x_Melissa_x)

1,2-dibromo-1,2-dimethylethane (with or without the numbers)
1,1-dibromo-2-methylpropane
2,3-dibromobutane
I'm not sure whether these answers are ACTUALLY correct, it's just what my teacher said
-
Re: WJEC AS & A2 ChemistryI don't get it, all those are totally different compounds. :/(Original post by Zebra-Zahra)
We were discussing this earlier in class and my teacher said that they were likely to accept:

1,1-dibromo-2-methylpropane
2,3-dibromobutane
I'm not sure whether these answers are ACTUALLY correct, it's just what my teacher said
Unless, the question asked you about a compound that COULD have been any of those things.
I didn't see the paper, I didn't do it.
How's everyone feeling for CH4?
I really like the proteins topic, and all the spectroscopy stuff, but I'm struggling to remember all the conditions and reactants for processes.
And I HATE polymers! -
Re: WJEC AS & A2 Chemistry(Original post by AnonyMatt)
I don't get it, all those are totally different compounds. :/
That's what I thought, but he said that it depends how you number them or something
I'm rubbish at chem so I didn't get any of those answers anyway
I hate CH4 with a passion. I can't remember all the reagents, conditions, mechanisms etc
-
Re: WJEC AS & A2 ChemistryI hate CH4 too! I just did a past paper and it seems like they ask really random questions in every paper. The one I did asked for the mechanism for free radical Substitution of Chlorine with Methane. I am also struggling to remember all the reagents and conditions(Original post by Zebra-Zahra)

Re: WJEC AS & A2 ChemistryI would love that tbh. I barely know any though!(Original post by Zebra-Zahra)
Maybe we could start a reagents/conditions/mechanism list on this thread? Or does that sound like too much work/nerdy?
Carboxcylic acid and alcohol -> ester + water
The worst thing is that I don't have any material. I'm not in chemistry lessons in college, and I forgot I threw out all my past papers and mark schemes last summer. D: -
Re: WJEC AS & A2 Chemistry
Yeah, a list sounds good!
Okay, from my notes.....
Chlorination of benzene:
-Electrophilic substitution
-Absence of light
-Room temperature
-Anhydrous conditions
-Presence of a halogen carrier, e.g. aluminium chloride
Product is chlorobenzene

Re: WJEC AS & A2 Chemistry
The Friedel-Crafts Reaction
-Benzene is treated with iodomethane
-Presence of aluminium chloride
-Room temperature
-Anhydrous conditions
-Electrophilic substitution
Product is methylbenzene
The reaction is sometimes called 'alkylation' - introducing an alkyl group into a benzene ring
If an acyl halide is used, a ketone is formed
-
Re: WJEC AS & A2 Chemistry
Forming alcohols from halogenoalkanes
-When an alkane is warmed with aqueous NaOH, the corresponding alcohol is formed.
-Sn2 (Nucleophilic substitution by a bimolecular process)
Alcohols from carbonyl compounds
-Carbonyl group may be reduced by lithium tetrahydridoaluminate(III), sodium tetrahydridoborate(III), sodium and ethanaol, and zinc and ethanoic acid. -
Re: WJEC AS & A2 Chemistry
Alcohol + carboxylic acid
-Presence of conc. sulfuric acid
-Forms esters
-Often called 'esterification'
Elimination of alcohols
-Excess of conc. sulfuric acid
-180°C
-Elimination of a molecule of water
-Alkene formed
Oxidation of alcohols
-Aqueous potassium dichromate or aqueous sulfuric acid -
Re: WJEC AS & A2 Chemistry
Hey everyone
My teacher has said that 10% of the CH4 marks can come from CH2 is this correct?
Some of the past papers such as 'june 2009 CH4' has got the electrophilic addition of HBr and the mechanism isn't that from CH2
? or is this an old spec exam paper cause I'm sure the first CH4 new spec exam was in jan 2010
? CONFUSED XD?!
Thanks guys :') -

January 2010 was the first paper of the new syllabus. They changed the element of the paper that had a CH2 content and replaced it with a general synoptic element. So they can basically ask you anything within reason about any of the CH1 & CH2 stuff.
btw thanks for the info about liverpool
its handy to know, and im really nervous since its my first medical interview
-
Re: WJEC AS & A2 Chemistry
Oh jeez that's panicked me quite a bit now
I know all of CH1 and CH4 but I haven't looked at CH2 since summer D:! better start having a look
Thanks again!
It was my first interview too
I had two really young doctors and they make you feel really at ease
Good luck and no problemo!

Thanks
