    Starting at Huddersfield in 2011?
    Hi,

I'm at Huddersfield now as a first year. Just thought I'd put a post on here in case anyone wants to PM or ask me any questions about what Huddersfiled is like and I will try and answer them for you

I'm a first year at the moment. Been living in Yorkshire all my life though.

    1) Huddersfield is a pretty safe town. I walk around at night and I feel really safe. Depends on where you are though because there are rough council estates. The town has it's fair share of scallies.

    2) The library and computer service is really good. There is a 24hour computer room and there are LOADS of books to support you on your course.

    3) The staff in Huddersfield are really friendly. There is a real community spirit in the university.

    4) Storthes Hall is where all the 1st years usually live and it is a trek. There is a free bus, but i'd really have a deep think if you want to live in the sticks or not. Taxi fare costs a bit if you're on your own and there isn't a decent shop nearby (though there is a shop on the site).

    5) The nightlife is ok, but gets boring. Full of average bars and overpriced clubs. The most popular student ones are Camel and Tokyo. There are a few real ale pubs and most pubs and bars are pretty cheap. The novelty wares off a few months later. You are near Leeds and Manchester though and there are night trains (courtesy of Transpennine Express). They also run to York and Liverpool frequently.

    6) It's pretty multicultural. There's a big asian and black community. There are racial tensions in the town though, but I haven't seen or heard anything serious yet.

    7) It is absolutely COLD in the winter and warm in the summer.

there's a couple of things tht i'm worried about.... i love to rave but dont like to travel out of town all the time cuz its such an effort, so is there a lot of student events and **** at clubs throughout the year? like student nights. And also, is it really bad tht the halls are out in the sticks, im not really feeling that to be fair.... going lectures hungover and knowing ive got to travel like 20 minutes to get into town.. and then back home too...

There are other Halls such as Aspley and Ashenhurst.

TBH rave and Huddersfield doesn't go together. If you want exciting clubs go to Leeds or Manchester and commute. You'll get tired of the usual student dives (Camel, Tokyos and D-Bar at Storthes). The town is pretty boring and grey TBH. Full of ugly mills. It's too out in the sticks for my liking. I'm thinking about moving to Leeds and commuting because I really like the university because the teaching is great and there's loads of support. No beef with the uni. Just the town.

There's lots of Asians/Pakistanis around. Seems like everyone knows everyone so you'll find someone.

i'm starting in september 2011 i live down south but do know the town as its like a second home to me the last 2 years, i'm staying at firth point no idea what its like and some people say its awful i didn't want to go 5 miles away coz i have a hr and half commute to collage now and i just can't deal with it :P want it to be dif at uni. yeah don't really try and venture into the council estates there not that nice and there is a bit of a gang thing going on, i found don't mess and u wont get messed with, u know dont start on anyone or try to be clever, but in the actual town i always feel really safe.

Are there lots of British-Asians at Huddersfield University itself (not just the town, specifically non-Muslim)? I'd really really appreciate if you answered, thanks
LOL I'm guessing you're the one that posted Anon asking this earlier.

I wouldn't worry. West Yorkshire in general is pretty multicultural which includes a large Indian community.
