I have to say, the cheap bic knockoff biros from tesco suck. Their colours suck, they make my hand cramp, they're nasty to look at and they're ****ing unreliable. I went through an entire pack over one term (4 months)

I used a blue biro for two weeks it still looked like it had ink inside but it was empty, tesco rip offs!
Back to my main point use your natural juices!

I tend to go for Cross pens, they're about £30- 50 but they're really worth the money.

I'm left handed too - so I don't bother with fountain pens either

EDIT: http://www.websterspenshop.co.uk/pens/cross/classic-century/ That's a good Cross pen and it's only £30, I think I might get myself one as a spare

This one looks nice too, if you're up for spending £700 on a pen .
Bic, Black Biro

EDIT: oh yeah, bring like about 3 just in case

They are very reliable though

My trusty bic has never let me down
I think when I get a job I'm going to make a side company specialising in making a comfortable pen for left handed mathematicians/economists/formula people. It's well annoying how there isn't one already.
I always use fountain pens, I really like them. But I always bring blue pens...black pens (with the heavy lined paper) looks awful! My friends are used to quickly slipping me a couple of Bics when we're filing into the exam hall...they're all super organised, trips to WHSmith at the beginning of the exam season every year...

I walked into all my essay exams this year with only this pen. I'd trust it with my life.
