    Re: N00b goes Powerlifting
Large amount of random discussion in my fitness blog. Shhhh...

    STRONGMAN COMP TIME

    WEigh in 72kg
    Easy weight making.

Everyone else seemed to be either 5 ft 2 guys that looked HENCH or guys at like 78/79kg that have dropped a load of weight to make the weigh in and were weighing in at 74.9 etc...

    Log Clean And Press
    - 60kg
WEird Grip, Never tried log before until practising with the 30kg one just before the event started. Did 2 quickly then failed the press then quickly tried another and failed the clean. Took like 5 seocnds break and got another rep in and then failed the 4th on the press as well.
3 reps, Came at least 2nd from last as saw someone else get 1.

Editor of men'sfitness magazine was there and he managed 4. Was talking to him and he seems a decent down to earth guy.

Car Deadlift-(Vauxhall Van) 220kg in Hand
Last minute advice of how to actually use straps helped a load. Failed first rep and then had 15 seconds of rest then somehow monged up a rep whilst barely holding it it seemed. Then forced a second out and saw photographer take a pic(~Hello new fb cover pic). Then got told there was 15 seconds left so REALLY wanted another and somehow got it.
3 Reps, Came about halfway out of 14. 4 guys 0 repped it, another guy got 1.

Top guy somehow got like 22 reps, 5ft 2 guy though so not far to move each rep. Men's fitness editor hurt his back on his way to 0 reps and pulled out of the rest of the contest.

    Farmers Walks-60kg
Grip was shot from the deadlift and could not get into a good rythm with this.
Got 50ish metres, 2nd to last, Ahead of the guy that dropped out. :ahee:

    Knockout Tug of War
Best of 3, lose first one, win second, lose third. Knocked out first round...
Technically joint last with like 7 others.

    Medley
80kg Prowler push 20m, 105kg duckwalk 20m, think like 100kg sled on end of rope,. Stand still and ull towards you for 20m. Load 2 small sand bags onto a Barrell.

Flew threw the prowler easily, duckwalk was awquard as hell. Smacked into my ankle and bled a bit in white socks. Rope was slow and other guy almost caught me up. Sand bags were fairly light.
58 seconds. Think came just under halfway down the order. Defianely beat a few guys that did it in just over a minute.

    Successful day is successful.

kk, but im taking it u were never skinny - I am and just need to bulk up a little bit, as in no longer be skinny - would starting strength do this sufficiently, or should I look at a hypertrophy orientated program?

    (Original post by sil3nt_cha0s)
Do a hypertrophy program. Starting Strength is great if you want massive quads and very little else to show for it.
A lot of people have noticed how much bigger I have got in 6 months of SS (i gained 10kg), my body has grown proportionally (My legs were always big in proportion to my body i guess)

    Re: N00b goes Powerlifting
Decided to go gym as had a day off from work and am only feeling a medium amount sore/achey from the comp, Thought a small workout would help.

    WEigh in
72.5kg, Standard, Cba weighing myself every session in future as there's no need as i always stay around the same lately so will just check it once a week or so to make sure i dont become 65 or 85kg...

    Front Squats
    20*7
    60*3
    80*1,3
    85*3,2
Meh, cba'd doing more, didn't want failed reps today.

Incline BB Bench, really wide grip- First time ever i think
    20*5
    30*5
    40*5
    50*5,5,5,5,6

The seat is set up almost vertically so it's like a really awkward press with a wide grip. Felt a little bit like the log i failed to press for a decent amount at the comp. May do them occasionally in future after normal bench for luls. Reckon i could easily add weight for a while as when i get the technique down it will be fine.

    Deadlifts on Step
    DOH Grip
    40*5
    90*4
130*f, grip still dead, i knew i had to train it as it was bad in farmers walks etc but tried too early.
    mixed grip
    130*2
Embaressingly Terrible, Grip just felt useless

    Pull Ups
    bw*5,5,5,5,5

All decent and slow and controlled etc. May try adding 2.5kg a week for lols and see if it works. Did 25 in 5 sets as well, cant remember how that compares to my pull ups in the past tbh, Think my old best was like 6 or 7 for pull ups and 4 for chins but dont remember.

Actually i got told that on my first 6 months of SS from people i knew. I think you will always get a little bit bigger but it's whether you could make better progress on a purely mass building program is the question i think...

Fair enough, I guess I think a little differently, in that the strength gains more than made up for any extra increase in mass on a mass building program

True, i'd rather be stronger than look stronger tbh.

In the comp i just entered i looked the weakest by a mile yet i deadlifted the car 3 times(the best test of pure strength) when a bunch of others couldn't move it or only got one.

    Thanks.

    Yea, it was awesome fun.

If there are ever anymore u75kg ones reasonably close to my house then yea.
Need to work on overhead stuff and grip strength a lot as well as pure strength for like deadlift etc.

Full results and pics should be out in the next few days...

Got to gym, Realised i hadn't back squatted in ages.
    Squats
    20*8,
    40*6
    80*5
    100*5,5,5

Tougher than it should have been, Will be fine in a few weeks.

    Press

    20*5
    30*5
    40*3
Then going for aim of 3*3
    52.5*3,3,3
Push Press - Aim of 3*3
    60*3,3,1

Did 1, then racked it and discreetly passed out.
Had not eaten in 6 hours.

Gave up on rest of original plan including pin press/Deadlifts/Db Bench/Pull Ups/Bicep curls

    Pull Ups*7,6,6,6
Got 25 reps in 4 sets. Will go for 5*5 at +5kg next time.

    Re: N00b goes Powerlifting
    Weigh in 73kg

    Front Squats
    20*5
    0*5
    60*3
    90*3,3,3

Lower back felt weird and tight during these, working back up in 3*3 and want to get to 100...

    Bench
    20*9,
    40,50,60,70*5
    80*5
Back on madcows for bench on alternate workouts as when i actually did it it worked. Need a bit of consistency as my training has been all over the place lately.

    Trap Bar Deads
    40*5
    80*5
    110*3
140*5,5,5,5,5(5*5 PB, did 3*10 a few weeks back but from raised handles and step)
Hands destroyed but need to train grip so 25 reps of 140kg from the floor should help.
Not even the slightly rised handles on these, Decent volume. I much prefer trap bar grip to standard grip.

    DB OHP
    10kg*10
    16kg*10,8,5

Think a rep PB but these are accesory and fun.

    FS Holds
    100kg*30
    120kg*15
Should do these on non front squat/deadlift days as i was knackered by this point.

Was gonna curl but had to go work.
Plan for next time is backsquat 3*5/pressing(Will get program off Gallium/commandant)/+5kg pull ups 5*5/DB Bench/FS Holds

    Gym

    Squats
    20*5,
    40*4,
    60*4,
    80*3,
    105*5, 5,5
left lower back pain ffs. Happened last few times I've back squatted...

    press
    20*5,
    30*3,
    40*3,
    55*3,3, 3
    push press
    62.5*3,3,3
    pin press height 2.
    55*2,3, 2
    weird technique to these.

Gallium/ commandant, if you read this pm me the link to the program for pressing please? Going on what I remember from ages ago atm.

    pull ups+5kg*5, 5,5, 3, 3
Nvm, will get the 5*5 next time.

    db bench
    16*5,
    24*10, 10, 9
Hadn't done these in a while so they were a bit wobbly. Will he back up to 28/30 in no time...

Forgot to do Fs holds Ffs.

    Re: N00b goes Powerlifting
command posted the link 2 days ago in muscle soc,

but from what i remember it's

3-5 sets on everything 1-3 reps

    paused strict press
    push press
pin press ( i usually did 5s on these)
close grip bench ( 6-12 reps)
another tricep movement ( 6-12 reps)

start on the lwoer side of the volume scale and build up slowly, should be able to add 2 sets or 2.5kg each week without a problem, after 6 weeks reset your press and sub a movement e.g start with push presses first then do seated db press etc etc

Really? I thought the funniest were the 10 chins of log pressing followed by me trying my hardest to pose whilst holding the weight of a car.

Sandbag was too light anyway. Like 25/30kg or something. Everyone else seemed to be making a right effort over it but I kinda just grabbed it...

It was awesome fun. You should Definately do one if you get the chance. You'd do well as they're a lot of pressing and deadlifting.

So I do. Lol, never noticed...

    Gym

    Front Squats
    20*5
    40*4
    60*3
    70*1
    92.5*3,3,3

    Fairly tough tbh.

    Bench
    20*10
    40,50,60,70*5
    82.5*3
    60*8

Hot gym, making easyish things feel hard

    Trap bar deadlifts
    40*5
    80*5
    120*2
    150*4,5,5,3
Set up wrong for first set and had to change grip and it killed me.
A LOT tougher than last week at 140. Still a killer on the grip.

    DB OHP
    8kg*5
    16kg*10,10,10

Nice for assistance, Nice and high reps.
