    Re: Social Work 2011
hi guys.... Great to see so many people enthusiastic about Social Work. Im a third year student at Huddersfield Uni. I applied to Hudd, Lincoln, nottingham, manc met and dmu. I got some sort of response from all.

Lincoln- interview. Was informal interview, and a written task about a case summary. I was offered a place on that day.
DMU- Interview. Was group interview (intense and very competitive as everyone is after the same goal so easy to get over shadowed if you dont hold your own ), written task on case summary then individual interview. Was offered a place on youth and community degree as they felt my experience was better suited.
Notts- Offered me a place on Social Policy degree.
Hudds- interview with lecturer and someone working in SW arena. (set questions to answer that u see before), written task on case summary. This out of all of them was most informal.
Manc Met- Also offered me a place on the Social Policy Degree.

Social Work is very competitive. However if you have enthusiasm, passion for job and good skills for working with people, and are able to portray this in interview then you will be fine.

Its important to make sure in interviews make sure you begin to use SW themes: e.g Anti oppresssive, anti discriminatory, empower, safeguard, signpost, and advocate. All ideas that SW lecturers love.

If any of you have any questions then im here, and happy to help.

I'm not to sure if the GSCC is being cut but they're trying to open a sw college for excellence so all the bodies e.g. GSCC will end up there I think (or something like that!). These are the codes of practice: http://www.gscc.org.uk/codes/ - you don't need to learn them all but having an idea of what they're about should do the trick!
When they ask something like "why do you think you would be suitable", try to include things such as being non judgemental, believing everybody deserves the same opportunties regardless of things such as social class, being honest, trustworthy, reliable, able to build good relationships with people, you want to empower people as opposed to a job like teaching where you tell people things, you want to help stamp out prejudice (think of ways you would do this incase they ask e.g. challenge attitudes towards your service users) etc.
For the case study example you gave, the first point of call would probably be the girl as she is 15 and therefore technically a minor. You would ideally want to find out what is so bad that she feels that way, and are there any other issues at home that she hasn't mentioned e.g. violence, oppression etc. You would obviously speak to the parents to find out their point of view and what is happening also. Then, if it was obvious things were not going to work out, you could look at something like staying with other family members and in a worse case scenario, somthing like a section 20 under the Children Act - which is where the local authority have a duty to provide voluntary accomodation for young people who cannot/won't go home although their parents do have a right to pull them out of it. Your first point of call would be other family though as in laws such as the Children Act (1989) it is said that a child will have the best upbringing with their family. Hope this helps!
p.s - don't worry about how technical this all sounds-you'll be streets ahead just for having ANY knowledge of this sort of stuff
    Thank you, very much. x

Hi I had an interview there last week, it was with a lecturer and a carer. They were pretty standard questions, why do you want to be a social worker, what do you know about the GSCC? What experience have you had? everyone had 30 minute interview slots.

Unfortunately I was really nervous and it showed, I know I could have done loads better!!

Relax and be yourself, good luck

Hi, i see you have also applied to ARU. Have you heard anything back yet apart from the acknowledgement? I haven't yet, so I was wondering if anyone else has heard anything. I'm getting so nervous!

I have applied to ARU aswell and so has a friend of mine, neither of us have heard a peep. Admissions told me interviews last year were done in Mar/April.

    Re: Social Work 2011
    Just updating;
UEA -Acknowledgement, but noting for ages
ARU - Acknowledgement but again nothing for ages
Beds- invited to stage 1 essay. Went well nothing too taxing.

Whilst waiting to be called for essay at beds it was really interesting. I chatted to a good few people and the ones who knew their stuff really stood out. There were a few who had no idea about what I was going on about and it showed. No one was talking and I had a mare trying to get people to. I know its nerve racking, but after doing a medical interview and recruiting people for my own business, I know this really is where people are watching you. One girl told me she lied when she got nervous (erm....) another really came across as immature, some seemed to me to be perfect for the role.
I'm not saying I know everything, but I know body language and it was clear who knew their stuff.
In the question time before the essay, I asked if the GSSC council's demise will have an impact on our studies and registraition to the new body. The number of people who didnt know who or what the GSSC was, at least by the looks on their faces, was unreal.

I am looking forward to the interviews now, should be good and I think the essay was a great idea to windle us down further.

Massive good luck to all on here who are trying to get in. I think if we read up, do our homework, control our nerves and use our common sense, we should have little to worry about.
