UN National Competitive Recruitment Examination
Has anyone sat this exam? I would like to know more about it, especially the economics one. There is a sample paper on the UN website but I was wondering if there are any more anywhere? Any info would be very welcome! I understand the best way to prepare is just to go through textbook stuff, study etc but anything else?
Also, I don't speak any other useful language apart from English- would it be useful for me to try to learn Spanish, French etc at this stage (I am doing my postgrad now)? Which language would be most useful?
Thanks. -
Re: UN National Competitive Recruitment Examination
I cannot remember my password or email I used for 'Nya'... but I'm the same person lol
The NCRE has been changed to the YPP now. Applications have opened and will close September.
Here is more info:

My preferred field is not available this year so I am going for the next best thing (Humanitarian Affairs), if I get to sit the exam I will have a lot of studying to do for it!
I noticed you wrote on another topic as well- there are test centres around the world so you can do it in the one closest to you, you don't have to go to New York (you can tick your preference in the application form).
The exam takes place in december. -
Re: UN National Competitive Recruitment Examination
Same here, also going for the next best thing with humanitarian affairs - after downloading the previous exam papers think its going to be pretty tough! Does anyone know where we can get a suggested reading list for how to prepare for these, i.e. a suggested reading lists - its strange i've browsed the internet for ages and theres hardly anything on these exams!

Re: UN National Competitive Recruitment Examination
If you look at the exam itself, you can make out clear sections/topics. Then look at the OCHA website, it has a section for thematic areas which basically coincide with those in the exam. So if you study all the materials on the OCHA website (and there are plenty), that should give you a good idea of what you need to know, and this may make it easier to find further info

I also emailed some of my uni profs who do relevant modules/courses to ask them to give me the course outline and reading lists, but so far havent received too many replies.. -
Re: UN National Competitive Recruitment Examination
I think I'm going to go for the administration stream. Is anyone else doing this? Also, what types of things did people put in their covering letters? And did you put down all your work experience, even if it was unpaid and without any real responsibilities? Thanks!

Re: UN National Competitive Recruitment ExaminationDo you know if you have to have completed your university degree as opposed to just being in third year?(Original post by frognoise)

Re: UN National Competitive Recruitment ExaminationHey Lenny, congratulations on being invited to the HA exam!(Original post by Lenny2011)
Hey All!
Just got accepted for Humanitarian Affairs exam. Anyone out there who is doing HA and want to study/exchange materials together? drop me a line.
Can I ask, what's your nationality / which country did you apply under? I'm British and applied for Administration - anxiously waiting to hear back. Actually, anxious is an understatement!!! -
Re: UN National Competitive Recruitment ExaminationI'm also British and have applied for Administration - and I'm still waiting too. Guess it must be soon if the HA applicants have already heard back?(Original post by batavia)

Re: UN National Competitive Recruitment ExaminationHi, According to the YPP portal (https://careers.un.org/lbw/home.aspx?viewtype=NCEWN) only internal candidates have been notified so far, but apparently not long for the rest of us.(Original post by Me_over_here)

Re: UN National Competitive Recruitment Examination
Hi All!
I'm from Angola and I applied in HA. I have to agree with Enner, just read the thematic areas in the OCHA website and you will have a background on what the exam will be. I have some notes if there is anyone doing HA. All the best to everyone.
