We always read a bit of Moliere as a class, was never my cup of tea though!
Read a good book at A2 called 'a sack of marbles' or something like that, but was obviously in French
Also not really a classic but the book version of the diving bell and the butterfly is really good. Not sure I'd reccomend it as your first French book... but worth a go!
