Internship possibilities for politics student
Hello, I am in my first year of an International Politics degree and am considering the possibility of doing an internship either this summer or next summer. However I am unsure what internships would best suit a student like myself. I have done a google search for internships and the most common ones are for accountancy or law firms, and while these do appeal to me I was wondering if there are others that may be more related to my politics degree.
I am unsure of what I want to do when I graduate, so I am willing to broaden my horizons with an internship, and I would love to get some ideas of the kinds of internships politics students have done as right now I'm feeling a bit lost in the mass of internships.
Thanks very much. If you want any further background of myself then please ask! -
Re: Internship possibilities for politics studentNATO do one in Brussels, they give you an allowance to cover costs e.c.t. You have to have done 2 years of uni and be 21 to apply and it is very competitive, but if you could get a place it would look amazing on a CV. (Especially considering you need an MA to get a paid job at these places)(Original post by mazammit)

Re: Internship possibilities for politics studentSorry I wasn't sure. Even though it doesn't fit your bill for the summer I think it would be worth applying when you've finished uni.(Original post by mazammit)
Hey jelly, that sounds very interesting. What is the duration of their internships?
edit: nevermind, I should have googled it before asking you! It seems they're 6 months.. -

I know Politics students with internships at The Economist and The Financial Times.
Not me though. I'm a fail.

Both at QMUL with me lol.
How did they get these internships by the way? I would be really interested in doing something similar
Thanks! -

Re: Internship possibilities for politics student
There is no secret. You need to network to break into journalism. No other way unfortunately.
Edit: My mate has secured work with Sky, ITV and another friend now works at NBC as a production assistant (Both QMUL grads 2009)Last edited by unknown demon; 26-01-2011 at 21:45. Reason: new information -
Re: Internship possibilities for politics student
Great that you are thinking about internships! I would advise you to do one both this and next summer. The more experience you have the better!!
Would you be willing to go abroad to do an internship?
Either way, have a look at various NGOs ( not just the famous ones i.e Amnesty, Oxfam etc), research centres and so on. You should be able to finds lots!

Re: Internship possibilities for politics student
I'm in my third year of a British Politics and Legislative studies course at Hull uni, as part of the course, in our third year we undertake a year long internship in parliament, either working for an MP, Lord or in a party's whip's office. I have found this immensely useful and have learnt an awful lot about the real running of an MP's office, policy and what constituent's care about. Doing an internship with an MP is one of the most obvious internships for a politics student and if you have an interest in IR issues you could choose an MP with similar interests e.g. Bob Walter.
http://www.w4mp.org/ has a useful list of internships, several of which list MPs. You could also write to your local MP (either at home or at uni) and see if they have any spaces. Regarding expenses/ salary, this really depends on the MP, some people on my course do get a salary, some, like myself, get their travel and lunch paid for and others get nothing at all.
Alternatively, pressure groups, charities, trade unions, many of these offer internships. Also, through doing an internship in parliament, you can network and gain more opportunities for internships, e.g. I am doing a week at the NUT this Summer and 6 weeks with a charity I met at a parliamentary APG.
The most important thing to remember is that internships should be relevant to the career you want to progress, if you want to go into the field of IR, internships at charities such as Amnesty, Human Rights Watch, Oxfam etc can all further this interest. Also, you could try applying for internships with MEPs, local MEPs also have constituency offices so you wouldn't even have to travel to Europe all the time.
Ultimately it is up to you, the vast majority of politics graduates I have spoken to state the necessity of internships for getting a graduate job so doing one, even though they are expensive, is really vital.
