Accommodation at Uni. Southampton

Hey, I've accepted my offer at Soton, and have been looking through all the halls and whilst I've seen some of them I'm still absolutely lost as to what I should go for :/ I preferably want somewhere really social, shared bathroom and not too fussed about catered or self-catered. Any suggestions?

Chamberlain Halls cater for all of the above! The rooms are nice and big, easy to socialise in and has Chambers Bar and catering kitchen right beneath it.

Although they have single pane windows so it can get a little cold.

Tbh you can't go wrong anywhere in Soton, they're all pretty good.

Oh, actually, I've heard Bentcraft is not so good, it's way up in the north of the city by the motorway apparently

In Wessex Lane the shared bathrooms are Monte 1 and 2, difference between them being that in Monte 1 you're in a corridor with 20 other people, and Monte 2 you're in a flat with 7 people, so it's up to you and your preferences there.

Can't speak for Glen Eyre, the other big halls complex though sorry.
I thinkkk it only tends to be the en-suite options on Glen Eyre that can be slightly anti-social, so you're pretty sorted with shared bathroom - you share between 4-8 here I think. (not 100% on the highest number in Brunei - the rest are 4 to 6 for sure).
Everywhere is self-catered except one block of Richard Newitt. Never been in there though so no idea what that's like sorry!
Chamberlain does seem a good shout; seems like a pretty good atmosphere. Over the road from Glen Eyre so it's not like you're massively out of the way or anything.

Although never been there either, so....:p:

If you want communal you might do well going self catered. You'll have a decent sized kitchen to share with the rest of the flat. I'm not surte if the shared bathroom will make it more social.

From my experience Glen Eyre and chamberlain seem to be very social places. Glen has a lot of grassy areas where people sit, play games etc when there's decent weather.
Monte 2, monte is way better than glen, the busses are MUCH more regular and go everywhere, yes it might be an extra 5-10 minute walk to campus, but who cares when you get a free bus pass.
Guess it depends if you consider a 10min walk to a bus stop significant

Cheers guys, all very helpful advice! The only reason I want shared bathroom to be honest is because in 2nd/3rd year you have to share a bathroom anyway so whilst en-suite is nice, I'd rather save the expense! I have heard that Glen Eyre and Chamberlain are probably the most social places, although next week I'll be staying with two of my friends who are in Connaught... They seem to worship the place because it's so social so if it's decent then I'll consider it  debating on whether to go catered or self-catered, I am suuuuuch a lazy cook it's ridiculous...

I have an offer for nursing and will opt for self catering due to the shift patterns I'll be working on placement. Also will have to go for communal bathroom as I think as a nurse our academic years are longer so the money will have to go further. The free bus pass would be useful, do all halls get one?

Do you need to firm/insure the offer before you can register with the accommodation website?

Connaught! We have: shared bathrooms, reasonable-sized rooms (massive ones in the old-quad) and we're part-catered! < the latter of which makes us extremely sociable. Oh and the fact that Connaught's really small, and all that.
Oh and the buses stop right outside connaught (ok, not right outside, but it's literally a one-minute walk to the bus-stops). In fact, we have 2 equidistant, and one is best to go to in the mornings since the one in front of Monte is always crowded = connaught can get on the bus first! XD

Also had a mad urge to neg you for going to the first bus, even though I knew Connaught people do that already

This all sounds very good  Went to Connaught and it looked okay - very social

Also visited Hartley Grove which looked quieter, but it's really really nice there! Shame it's too expensive!!

So far I've whittled it down to Chamberlain, Connaught, Monte 1 and possibly Richard Newitt... but I don't know much about that one. Anyone know what RN is like?! x

Yo, I live there

I think it's pretty good! Good compromise between price + niceness for me, it's not ensuite but you only share between 4 (1 shower + two toilets) so...yeh. You're also in blocks (16 total) so it's pretty social if you get the right people/make the effort! The rooms are massive...

10 min bus ride/15 min walk, the management school is on the main campus. The bus is free if you live in halls btw.

Oh really? Didn't know that tbh. One more thing, I can't find how much does it cost to live in the Halls....I'm a postgraduate and I have a conditional offer for MSc in Int Banking & Financial Studies if that counts.

edit: Ok ok I found it!! It seems to be more expensive in Halls than in Wessex Lane Ensuite Rooms....
