So what do you med students think of obstetrics?
Discussion about medicine applications and medicine.

Not a clinical student yet, but to be controversial, as a medical student it's supposed to be really difficuly to see 'natural' births (or births full stop for that matter), as midwives hate us and makesure the student midwives get to see everything, while we get shot dirty looks and made to feel like *****...

Won't be surprised. Obstetrics is now quite midwive-driven with the doctors being involved only when there are complications. Some hospitals are now offering "gynae" as a 4 month F1 or F2 slot without obstetrics. Won't be surprised if they split the specialties a few years down the line with "midwife obstetric practitioners" trained to do C Sections

I know, i know, i was justifying my reasons without proper justification. My excuses were worse than my actions!! Ok the bottom line is i just want to be a surgeon, at the moment, but this may change who knows?(Original post by xx hannah xx)
in the middle of doing a module called "Life Cycle" in semester 1 at manchester. its great, really interesting and actually rahmed, has a LOT of developments in. In fact..one thing you might need to get straight before any interviews...in any branch of medicine you need to be prepared for lifelong learning! because thats what all medicine is about, whether u r a gp or a heart surgeon! think you might need to get that straight in your head. -
should i have a big 'OXFORD MEDICAL STUDENT' in my sig? not really my style.
i do have the steth icon in the corner though & my post was in response to yours about needing a ladder, in quotation marks & mimicking the structure/vocab of a few of your posts on the topic, albeit with changed content!
apologies if i was too subtle..
& your niceness & luck was appreciated, will take them forth to any clinical school interviews i might have!

The midwives at our hospital love medical students. I think this is why there seems to be a big barrier between doctors and midwives. Doctors think midwives are bulshy and hate them but we dont. We all need to be able to work together.(Original post by Fluffy)

Obstetrics fascinates me from the pyschological/social aspect of it. Having flicked through embryology however..the science behind it scares the hell out of me. If i hadn't of gotten into medical school i would have applied for midwifery. The midwifery students at Southampton are worked really hard from day one, i have a lot of respect for them. I like the fact that its one of the branches of medicine where nothing is usually pathologically wrong, but then thats from the midwifery side.
I've wanted to be a paediatrician since i can remember though..(don't worry i know i'll change my mind lots of times yet!)

...slightly off topic, but the midwives at our hospital seem to hate nursing students (and nurses for that matter!)
, honestly, the number of times we've been referred to as 'that kind of student'- to our faces as well!! i mean how rude!!
.....and babies look ugly when they come out!! -
