The midwives at our hospital love medical students. I think this is why there seems to be a big barrier between doctors and midwives. Doctors think midwives are bulshy and hate them but we dont. We all need to be able to work together.

I wont go into some of the stories I've heard from clinical students on how they have actually been treated by midwives then...

But agree with the all working together sentiment!

congratulations - you can join the growing group of people who see fit to randomly accuse me for no obvious reason than assuming i'm as petty as to voice my dislike of the content of one of their posts by clicking a 'disapprove' box, without even giving my name or telling them what my problem was..

Oh no go on tell me-i would be really interested to hear. It just shocks me how some qualified staff treat students, they seem to forget that they were students once upon a time!!!

Just wondered what your views were? Would any of you like to specialise in obstetrics? Have any of you been placed on delivery suite, and how did you find it? x

Based on feedback from medical family members, obstetrics has:

Lousy hours.
Babies seem to like being born in the wee hours of the morning.

High medical defence premiums.
In australia Obstetricians pay around 80K / year as premiums.

Dirty internal politics.
Nurses act as if they hate doctors and are trying to get them to leave obstetrics to midwives.

Results:
1.Brighter medical graduates are staying away from Obs
2. Most current obstetricians are switching to gynaecology since it pays better, has lower premiums and has better hours.

I read somewhere about the NHS.

Accident and Emergency, Psychiatry, Obstetrics and Gynaceology posts don't seem to attract many medical applicants.

Only 10% of ethnic minorities become Consultants.

Maybe it is different in United States though. It is all private practice there?

It varies year on year. Last year in London, A&E was the most oversubscribed speciality.

This year it's Medical Imaging.

Is medical imaging what a radiologist does?

Bit late to this thread but hey.

I'm quite interested in an O&G career - attachment was fab, and it's a great specialty with lots of new developments. There are however lots of drawbacks, which is why O&G is currently struggling to recruit british grads (I was basically told i'd have little problem getting a training post by the consultants where I did my attachment). It's the most highly litigated field, very unsociable hours etc etc. At the moment, the variety appeals to me, however, training is changing so much, and O&G are likely to become separate specialties.

Not sure I could do bog standard gynae - TAH, Vag Hys', and TVTs would become rather tedious! Gynae oncology on the other hand is very interesting.

Fertility also an interesting and developing field.

As for the madwife (sorry, i mean midwife) debate - Experiences will obviously vary, but the midwife way of doing things is very 'non-interventional' and anti-doctor. When things go wrong in obs, they have the potential to go very wrong (something I've seen). The whole 'natural' debate is all good and well, however, if you compare neonatal mortality rates around the world, the overriding determining factor is availability and quality of obstetric care.

--------------

Medical imaging is radiology.

As this thread has been resurrected, I thought I'd add how much I loved my O&G placement... The midwives were fantastically supportive, as were the students... I certainly wouldn't have got as much out of Labour Ward without them! They even let me 'graduate' from delivering placentas to a baby!!!!

The medical team I was attached to were really, really encouraging too - getting to scrub in and get involved...

I still feel very, very    thinking about it!
COULD ANYONE HELP ME WITH WORK EXPERIENCE? sorry about the caps!
