So what do you med students think of obstetrics?

Just wondered what your views were? Would any of you like to specialise in obstetrics? Have any of you been placed on delivery suite, and how did you find it?

Even though i am not a medic student as of yet, i think that i would like to challenge myself and opt for a slightly longer or harder course of specialisation.

But the thing is that everyone has their likes and dislikes and it doesnt really matter where you go becuase in the end you are still saving lives or bringing new lives into this world.

I wouldnt mind doing this actually, and i hope to do it as part of my medical learning, it would be really interesting.

wonder if you're confusing inherent 'challenge' or 'hardness' of the jobs with perceived competition? not sure how valid that is..

anyway, not sure about O&G for me - studying embryology/reproduction terrified me with all the things than can go wrong! :redface:

although i suppose an O&G rotation (not for a few years for me!) might help put things back into perspective in that most patients will be happy, healthy, satisfied customers.. :p:

By a challenge i meant something that would always keep me at the forefront of new medical developments. I want to continue learning for the rest of my life! I didnt mean hardness in terms of competition - i think getting into uni for medicine already covers that aspect for the rest of my life.

I am not all suggesting that O&G is not challenging, of course it is and of course it maust provide the person with endless personal fullfilment.

in the middle of doing a module called "Life Cycle" in semester 1 at manchester. its great, really interesting and actually rahmed, has a LOT of developments in. In fact..one thing you might need to get straight before any interviews...in any branch of medicine you need to be prepared for lifelong learning! because thats what all medicine is about, whether u r a gp or a heart surgeon! think you might need to get that straight in your head.

bear in mind obstetrics for a doc is completely different to that of a midwife. with yourself its going to be 90% normal pregnancies/deliveries.
With docs its the opposite.

if a non-gp doc is involved in care of a pregnant lady, something is wrong.
