Oh man Unlimited Saga was horrible.

And I've remembered my favourite last gen RPG - Radiata Stories. Incredible game, anyone else have the pleasure? Didn't get released in EU unfortunately

    (Original post by jacketpotato)
I feel exactly the same way as you. BUT there is an amazing RPG in this Gen - Tales of Vesperia. Eternal Sonata is good too
I didn't really like Eternal Sonata that much. The idea was pretty original, for an RPG, and the combat was pretty good too, but it still wasn't great. Tales of Vesperia would be something I'd look at but my Xbox is dead at the moment

I missed out on Radiata Stories. I don't do imports if I have to mess about with my consoles.

Tales of Vesperia is also on the PS3 if you don't mind importing from Japan.

Ah sucks man. I still have my NTSC PS2 lying around (somewhere) for all my old NTSC PS1 & PS2 games. Was totally worth the £70-ish I paid for it at the time

I don't do imports if I have to mess about with reading other languages.

Did just look for the demo on the JP PSN, as there was one, but it's gone now. boo hoo

Here's a question for you, What was your favourite Snes/SMD JRPG. Mine was chrono trigger. It had such an amazing storyline which was truely groundbreaking.

I was more a handheld player in that era, to be honest. I didn't break into consoles gaming properly until the N64, though I had a Mega Drive. I spent most of my time at that age playing the various Wing Commander games on the PC. My favourite from that era would easily be Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, though. Such an amazing game. FFVI, Chrono Trigger and Phantasy Star all deserve honorable mentions as well, though.

    Hello guys.

I would like to start off by saying I'm a BIG JRPG fan and can find enjoyment in even the worst ones (White Knight Chronicles)...so my opinions on JRPG's might seem very I dunno maybe optimistic is the word to most of you.

I'll start by reccomending two hidden gems that launched this year:

    - Yakuza 3

    - Nier

While Yakuza 3 had generally good reviews many don't know about it. Its like a mafia game set in Japan with a great story but its structure is like an RPG, its just a fun game with a good story, characters, tons of fun minigames, side quests (with good side stories) and so on. Highly reccomended. Word of warning though, the cut scenes are all in Japanese, only English subs are available.

    Next Nier:

Ok this game is hated by critics but I found it great. The story is good, characters are fine for the most part. What made me like it the most is the variety in gameplay, it will go from a puzzle game, to a 2D top down shooter to a KH type game...so you don't get bored. The soundtrack is one of the best this generation and there are 4 different endings.

    ____

My favourite JRPG of all time is Final Fantasy 6 followed by Dragon Quest 5 (played the remake on DS last year).

My non FF fav JRPG is Persona 3 and Persona 4.

My least favourite JRPG is FFX-2

 Did you play P3FES or vanilla, and which one was your favourite?

Wish they'd localise Tales of Vesperia PS3 into english. There seems to be a pretty vocal support for it in boards, but I'm not sure about numbers. :dontknow:

They're releasing Persona and Persona 2 on the PSP. Really love the Shin Megami Tensai series. Though, Digital Devil Saga is easily the best. Such a great game. The sequel was pretty damn good too.

Nyah, there's vocal support for just about every Tales of... game in existence and we all want them translated and released in our respective areas. America does a lot better than we do. They make some weird localisation choices as well. Strange company. Just wish they'd release all of them in the rest of the world. Such a great series.

Love the Yakuza series. 4 has come around quickly, it's out in only a few months (all being well)

Everyone should try Ys: The Oath in Felghana. It's (relatively) short, sweet and addictive - definitely one of my most enjoyed action RPGs. Some of the boss battles will have you tearing your hair out though, especially at higher difficulties.

Not to mention its phenomenal soundtrack, which is among my favourites out of all the games I've played, regardless of genre.

Ergh, has anyone played this game: Infinite Undiscovery. More like Limited No-discovery, sorry to get all cheesy, but this game was seriously flawed. I could barely work out the control system, until far into the game, it was very laggy and often just unpleasant to play. I mean I can cope with basic graphics but I felt this game was trying to look good but failed. The evolution of characters was stale, the combat system was appallingly confusing for no reason. I did not engage one bit. I've never played such a generic and stale JRPG, perhaps I need to stop buying random JRPGs when I'm out and about. However this process has never been so disappointing, I found some great games randomly. But anyway, I would not advise people to play this, it is a waste of time, and money. I'd rather get some food with the money. :sigh:

I found some slight amusement in it from time to time with the real time battle progression and the mini-game style combat system, however overall it pales in comparison to many other titles. It is unique in itself, so perhaps I should not compare it to other much bigger titles but... come on Squeenix, sort it out! Instead of working on bad games like these, you should be focusing on the next Final Fantasy or Kingdom Hearts or some of the titles we JRPG fans crave for but never get like Legend of Dragoon 2 or DMC 5.

Get updated: Square Enix Conference 2011

FFXIII-2 confirmed:Apparently, the response from hardcore FF fans, means they will re-make FFXIII-2 and it will be inspired by some of its much more successful predecessors.

They also say that the game will “exceed” Final Fantasy XIII in every way and feature an “evolved” battle system, but don’t go into specifics.

Motomu Toriyama, the director of both Final Fantasy XIII and XIII-2, stated that the game will feature a dramatic story involving lead character Lightning’s rival. The game’s tagline is why “does mankind defy its fate?”

Final Fantasy XIII-2 is real, and is slated to release, at least in Japan, in 2011 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. But it was reported and confirmed to be out in America and EU "next winter". Meaning this time next year (or a few months before) we should have FFXIII-2! I for one may not wait, I may be importing from Japan :nutcase:

FFvsXIII: This has been confirmed to be a PS3 exclusive. Apparently there will also be a very large world map in which there is access to an airship. Taking a leaf from the likes of FFIX, I for one am looking forward to it. No doubt it will jump out into Japan before it is released in Americas and way before EU. So as soon as there is a release date, I think I would be up for importing a copy from Japan. If all the hype works out, it looks to be phenomenal. Here is the 2nd video detailing the fighting and cut scenes, it doesn't look censored either. The graphics are as top notch and beautiful as FFXIII:yy:

Here is the latest trailer that came out a few hours back today. It details the fighting system.

Looks like the bet was right on the money! A Kingdom Hearts battle system style is being employed. Looks set to be phenomenal.

Type-...: Square Enix trademark in the European trademark database for Final Fantasy: Type-0 (that's a zero, not an "O"). Notably, Square also filed a logo that displays "Type-0" in Kanji along with the trademark, when the company typically trademarks just a name.

A new Final Fantasy spin-off wouldn't exactly be a surprise, as Square Enix has made them a big part of its business with titles such as Final Fantasy Tactics, Dissidia: Final Fantasy, and Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: The Crystal Bearers.

Final Fantasy Type-0 (Formerly known as Final Fantasy Agito:XIII) will release this summer in Japan for PlayStation Portable, complete on two UMD discs. The game will feature over 30 recorded voices as recording is proceeding smoothly. We've had it indicated to us by sources close to Square Enix that a Western release in 2011 is likely.

A new series is likely, however I'm not sure what to make of the "Types". I quite liked the name Agito. But we shall have to see. Type-1, Type-2 and Type-3 remain in the stages of early development and shrouded in mystery.

Dissidia Duodecim: The next Dissidia is looking to be awesome with a whole host of new characters. With the recent Shonen Jump announcement that Yuna from Final Fantasy X will be a playable character. Lightning, the angsty main character from Final Fantasy XIII, who could change her job class via her trademark Paradigm Shift. By simultaneously clicking the PSP’s L and R buttons, Lightning can be a Commando (brawler, good for finishing moves), Ravager (magic-user, good for chip damage), or Medic (healer, good for replenishing HP). There also Assist characters now, similar to games like the Marvel Vs. Capcom series, though I didn’t get a real handle on them (or who they were, other playable characters most likely) when I played.

Back to Yuna: According to Shonen Jump, she can summon two Aeons, Final Fantasy X‘s version of the series standard summon creatures, at the same time to attack for her. Her EX Burst attack involves summoning all of her Aeons to attack in succession.

The other new characters confirmed for Duodecim are:
    Kain Highwind (Final Fantasy IV)
    Laguna Loire (Final Fantasy VIII)
    Vaan (Final Fantasy XII)
    Tifa Lockhart (Final Fantasy VII)

It was also revealed Dissidia Duodecim will have a much more comprehensive single player mode than the first game. In addition to featuring new episodes starring the new characters, it will also include the entire storyline from the first Dissidia, which you’ll be able to play with the sequel’s new Assist moves and other tweaks.

Duodecim will be out March 3rd in Japan and in the 1st-2nd quarter in the West.

Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance: Yep thats right, Kingdom Hearts 3DS Is now renamed Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.

Yasue says the Nintendo 3DS game will use stereoscopic graphics when players fall from high places or fly far distances. The game will give players a sense of breakthrough speed. The team put forth an effort to make the action part feel new. Players will be able to switch between Kingdom Hearts series protagonists Sora and Riku in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance. This tactical element will make the game’s tempo feel fresh, Yasue explains.

Yasue promises to put in plentiful use of the Nintendo 3DS’ functions in Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance.

Looks like Sephiroth is back and we can play as Sora and Riku. I for one can't wait, it is going to be very good I think. Though, I don't know if I will be able to fork out for a 3DS =/ .

Anyway, that is all the news I have for now regarding the Square Enix conference 2011. If I find anything more out, I'll be sure to post it

Hey Darth mate, hows the apps going?

Nice to see you around, more JRPG fans are very welcome. Join the soc. Loving the selection, I found Nier to be very exciting and very fast paced. It did make for a break of pace in my usual gaming, a welcome break. Yakuza however is not really my kind of game, I could see the appeal however it did not hold me. I guess I simply prefer more "traditional" JRPG games.

Persona is a brilliant game series, I have played every single one and I am still an avid fan. However I found FFX-2 to be okay. It did seal off FFX which (whilst it had a great and brilliant ending and story) felt a bit empty and unfinished at the end. Certainly I wanted to find out about Tidus and stuff, so if you unlocked the secret ending on FFX-2 you get to see Yuna and Tidus re-unite and it was quite good. Though I must agree, it felt monotonous and dreary at times, however I wouldn't knock it down. Though, if I had to class it, I guess it would go at the bottom of the list of FF's I have played.

That's one problem with the Xbox, we don't have enough JRPGs I've played loads before, but the only ones on Xbox I've played are FFXIII (meh), Tales of Vesperia (pretty good, but not as good a Symphonia) and Lost Odyssey (not bad, but only borrowed it, so couldn't get into it).

    Anybody got some suggestions?

This is true and I do feel for you. Thank God for my brother having a PS3, and getting bored of it. However there are some definitely decent titles on Xbox and soon to come. Off the top of my head I can think of:
    - Nier - A fresh game on the scene, it does pretty well. Despite the reviews I would say Nier pulled it off very well. Free Fight
    - Eternal Sonata - its going to look really cheesy at first, but trust me you will like it. Amazing score, great story and very likeable characters. Turn-Based Hybrid
    - Blue Dragon - Very much like FF but slightly more cartoony, but very indepth with 3 disks of detailed and well crafted story and battle. Turn-Based
    - The Last Remnant - Graphics are okay and the story is meh, but this game really shines in its wide ranging battle system and the various quests and development levels. I quite enjoyed it and it certainly made me want to do everything in it. Party Turn-Based.
    - Star Oceans: The Last Hope - If you can get past the majority of annoying characters and generic design, you will find a great game. Very, very large universe to explore, a good story (if not overly-done), some definite depth to the level progression. This game really shines in the battle system, which whilst it isn't very complicated, is amazingly addictive and certainly hooked me right to the level cap at LVL120. I was so engaged, I put in over 100 hours getting through the level cap (by unlocking 500/1000 trophies in the game) and getting to the LVL200 max. The game has extensive quests and MEGA boses. May of which you can fight AFTER the story ends. Which to be honest, to beat the last boss you need LVL 200. So if you're looking for a long, immersive and action filled game with a lot to offer, I would highly recommend Star Oceans.

Do NOT get: Infinite Undiscovery. As I said above, I hated it.

    Less comonly thought of JRPG:
Bayonetta - Addictive battle system, and very good story. I found it amazing, all the 10/10 reviews speak for themselves. This game was class.
DMC4 - There is a certain addictive quality about Dante and the new Nero which just makes you want to strike the SSS rating on everything. DMC4 is a highly repayable game and a very difficult game to perfect. Especially where you get to Hell and Hell mode where everything has permanent devil trigger with double health at a highly increased aggression. Or pound enemies out on Heaven and Hell more where everything, including bosses are one shot kill. It is an amusing mode. (Note, there require unlocking through past modes).

But yea, this is what I can think of off the top of my head, there are quite a few others though. Just browse around :yy:

Is only available on the PS3, so doesn't matter to a 360 player. I have got it and have quite liked it. Waiting for its sequel now.

How can you like a game you've never even played?

I can also find no evidence that FFXIII-2 and FFvsXIII have been renamed "Type 1" or "Type 2" nor evidence that they've been brought under its trademark. Not saying your wrong, just that I'd like some evidence of this.
