    Bombscare at Hillhead?
There's currently about 5 police cars, a police dog van and a riot van parked outside the central building and there's an officer guarding an area that's been cordoned off near one of the halls. I've heard rumours that it was a bomb scare? Anyone know anything?

Rumour has it a student built or bomb or had some kind of bomb making materials stashed somewhere inside Hillhead Halls. The Royal Navy bomb squad are near the central building and the bomb squad's been shootin about Aberdeen all day.

STV have finally replied to my email. At first the police denied it but now they've confirmed it.

"Ongoing incident at Aberdeen University - Bomb Squad in attendence - Man sectioned under MHA - Students evacuated - No immediate threat to life"

It's taken hours for it to get on the news..even then it's only as far as STV. If this happened in England there would be national coverage trying to decide if it was some huge terrorist plot...though from the look of it since the guy was detained under Mental Health Act as opposed to Terrorism Act more likely the whole loner wanting to blow up / kill people in a revenge plot type scenario.

Yeah have to agree, I was waiting on my washing (which was inside the shut laundry room), and spent ages trying to find out more details on what was happening but there was nothing.

he never actually had a bomb, he was found with drugs in his room, and stuff to make a bomb, he was arrested last night. people were then evacuated at 1 today, and given alternative accommodation. the entire block is being searched. ****ing annoying when ive got an exam on tuesday and all my notes are in my room....

Either way there was obviously sufficient worry that there was a bomb, or explosive materials, for them to involve the bomb disposal unit and close a couple of the surrounding buildings.

Strange the BBC still has no story.

Yeah, it was mainly drugs and material which could be used to make a bomb. Also, the material of extremism.

Good news, I've heard some exams may be pushed back because of this. Keep watching like your e-mails or whatever.

I'm one of the individuals in Block 19 and I have to say I'm disgusted with the Facebook jokes and rumours that are going on. The guy was a usually very peaceful, decent person who through extended problems with mental illnesses and life stresses, and problems with drugs, felt the need to end his life, and some action had to be taken.

The bomb scare was a precautionary measure due to uncertainty whether chemicals in his flat pertained to drugs or something a lot more dangerous.

To any of those reading this and who have previously been laughing about it; this is a very serious and delicate matter and a normally decent guy has been driven to extremes through his inability to cope with life, and you should feel ashamed.

    Hi,

Seems to be a bit of confusion out there.

If anyone wants to talk about their experience, drop me a mail and I'll give you a call.

I'm a student on work experience with the Evening Express.

    Cheers

    Grant

Just got an email from the university; here it is for anyone who doesn't have access to it:

    Dear all,

You may be aware that there has been an incident over the weekend involving one of our students at Hillhead Halls of Residence.

Grampian Police were called to the flats around 6pm on Saturday night and enquiries are continuing. The student was apprehended under the Mental Health Act.

A number of occupants within that block of flats were evacuated on Sunday morning, as a purely precautionary measure to ensure their safety. They were given temporary alternative accommodation to allow police to continue their investigation in that block.

An Explosives Ordinance Disposal (EOD) team was called by police onto site on Sunday to ensure it was safe. Again I would stress at this stage that this was purely a precautionary measure and no-one had been injured. The EOD confirmed it was safe on Sunday night.

The University is co-operating fully with Grampian Police.

Student Support staff and University management were on site on Sunday to provide help and support to the police and any students who were concerned. If any students or staff have ongoing concerns they should contact Student Support on 273935.

Any queries from the press should be directed to the Communications Team on 273174.
The University would like to thank students for their understanding and patience in this matter and the Hall staff for the support they have been providing.

    Steve Cannon
    Secretary to the University
