How easy is it to get into American Football casually? I'm fairly fit and have quite broad shoulders, I do rowing so I have quite strong arms, but I am useless at kicking.

Can anyone link me to a quick guide on what the rough rules are?
    Moderately difficult but nothing crazy!

A strong upper body will be useful!

I can talk you through the rules on here if you like? The only rules i can find online are quite drawn out like a rule book style :/

Thanks for that mate, the rules are not too complicated I think it will just be a case of getting used to it.

I played rugby for many years and have considered american football a few times. Being big I would presumably be somewhat restricted in my position choice though

D is more fun. to be brutally honest. O is OK, I mean you are in the middle of all the great plays a play a huge part of an offense. if you don't protect the QB you can't pass and if you don't open holes you can't run.

But if you want to make highlight reel plays that are fun as hell and rewarding, play defensive end. you just kill people all day.

I see. Having no experience I doubt I will get much of a say in which I play but thanks for the advice. I do like to kill people.

Paddy, they usually ask you if you have some idea of where you would like to play

Hey people, I'm a huge NFL fan and I'm planning to play it when I'm at Uni. My question is, is it quite hard to get into the team? I have never played the game properly before and I don't play rugby either, but I am quite sporty. Would I stand a chance at getting into a team? I doubt I'd be that good a player and I'm not exactly that fit, but I am quite fast, have good hands and I know the rules very well.

It's really not that tough to get into a team, most places are just happy to have numbers, getting on the pitch however is another story.

Being fast and good hands people will likely tell you to play wide receiver, personally i'd actually disagree and say receiver in most leagues is boring as there aren't many legit quarterbacks in the UK. If I was fast, good hands and knew the rules, i'd rather play corner or free safety and have more fun. It depends on your personality though which you'd enjoy more.

The bold is true. Also, most teams use run based offences and so WR receivers spend 70% of their time blocking. not fun.

If you like the hard contact part (and you feel you wouldn't have much of an issue committing to a hard hit) then play safety. if wrap tackles are more your thing then play corner. speed is very useful for corner.

if you try hard and show enthusiasm you should have a decent chance of getting into a team, but as said above, getting in the starting line-up will be more difficult. being a bench warmer your rookie year can be useful though.

I think i want to be a WR or TE, is 6 foot too short for a tight end in the BUAFL? I know it is in the NFL, I just think I have the right skill sets for it.

definitely not too short. you should find yourself as average height. make sure you can block/catch well and then your good to go!

Speed - use to be a 100m sprinter
    Strength - i can deadlift 200kg for 1 rep and squat 140kg for 1 rep i can also bench 100kg for 4+ reps. i am about 6 ft - 170lbs.
Ability to tackle- i don't know i've never tried
Guts etc - i don't have the guts right now after playing a little i won't be a problem (hopefully i'm not paranoid)
Jumping- i have a very high vertical jump
Catching- semi-decent catcher but it can be worked on
Throwing- can throw but not far and not accurate(dunno how to throw the oval looking ball)

i want to be the guy who has to run and dodge all the players and run to the touchdown line.
